MICHAEL COBURN SENTENCED TO 23 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN WEST SUSSEX
A man named Michael Coburn, aged 49, has been convicted and sentenced to a lengthy prison term following a series of serious sexual offences committed in West Sussex. The legal proceedings reveal that Coburn was found guilty of multiple counts related to inappropriate and criminal behavior involving two young victims.
The crimes took place over a span of several years, specifically between 2018 and 2022, while Coburn was residing in the town of Billingshurst within West Sussex.
The investigation was initiated after the two victims, who had endured the assaults, decided to come forward and report their experiences to the police in January 2022.
Their disclosures prompted a thorough investigation by local authorities.
Following the investigation, Michael Coburn faced numerous charges.
Despite his initial protests of innocence, claiming he was not guilty of the allegations, a jury of his peers reached a unanimous verdict, convicting him on 19 counts related to sexual offences against the two girls.
The charges against Coburn were extensive and severe.
They included 11 counts of sexual assault on a child under the age of 13, four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual acts, two counts of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration, and two counts of attempted rape of a child under 13.
These allegations painted a troubling picture of the offenses committed over multiple years.
The case was brought before Lewes Crown Court, where, on September 29, a judge passed sentence.
Michael Coburn was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with an additional five years on license after release.
This means he will be subject to supervised release for five years following his time behind bars.
Furthermore, as part of his sentence, Coburn will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.
This measure is intended to monitor and restrict his movements to protect the community in West Sussex and beyond, acknowledging the serious nature of his crimes and the potential risk he poses to others.
This case underscores the importance of victim advocacy and the vigilant work of law enforcement in addressing and prosecuting sexual offences, especially those involving minors.
The community in West Sussex now faces the reality of the serious penalties associated with such crimes and the ongoing need to safeguard vulnerable individuals.
