MICHAEL CHAND FROM LONDON SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR RAPE AND ASSAULT IN ACACIA GARDENS
In a harrowing case that has shocked the London community, Michael Chand, a 46-year-old man, was handed a life sentence after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes against a woman he had only recently met.The incident unfolded in the Acacia Gardens area of N22, where Chand lured his victim to his residence on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
According to reports, the woman, whose identity remains protected, had established a brief acquaintance with Chand less than a week prior to the assault.
On the day in question, Chand contacted her and urged her to visit his home in Acacia Gardens.
Upon her arrival, the atmosphere quickly turned hostile.
Chand allegedly asked her whether she found him attractive.
When she failed to respond in the manner he desired, his demeanor shifted dramatically.
He became verbally aggressive, issuing threats and asserting that she was not permitted to leave the premises.
The situation escalated further as Chand resorted to physical violence, striking the woman and issuing threats of harm not only to her but also to people she knew.
Despite her repeated protests and pleas to stop, Chand continued to assault her physically.
The assault culminated in him raping her on three separate occasions, despite her clear and repeated refusals to engage in sexual activity.
The victim’s courage in resisting and her distress during the ordeal are noted as significant factors in the case.
Two days after the attack, on Friday, August 18, 2023, the woman contacted the police to report the assaults and rapes.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, launching an immediate search for Chand, who had already left London following the incident.
Later that day, Chand returned to the city and was promptly arrested by police officers.
He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with multiple serious offenses.
Detective Constable Cameron Crighton, who led the investigation, emphasized the severity of Chand’s actions.
He stated, “Chand is a sexual predator who subjected the victim in this case to horrendous sexual and physical abuse.
The victim showed incredible bravery by coming forward to police, providing a full account of what had happened and then reliving this by giving evidence in court.
She is central to this conviction and we do not underestimate the strength it has taken for her to do this.” Following a trial at Wood Green Crown Court that concluded on Friday, February 16, Chand was found guilty of three counts of rape and one count of assault.
On Wednesday, April 24, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of ten years to be served before eligibility for parole.
The case underscores the importance of reporting sexual violence and the commitment of law enforcement to pursue justice for victims of such heinous crimes in London.
