MICHAEL BERLLAQUE'S SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN LONDON REVEALED
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the London community, retired police officer Michael Berllaque has been sentenced to 15 and a half years in prison for heinous sexual abuse involving two young children. The crimes, which spanned nearly a decade, took place during the 1990s and early 2000s, while Berllaque was still serving as a member of the Metropolitan Police.
Michael Berllaque, who was born on May 20, 1955, and is currently 61 years old, was a long-standing officer who joined the Metropolitan Police Service in 1981.
During the latter part of his career, he was assigned to the specialized Jigsaw Team, a unit tasked with monitoring and tracking sex offenders.
Despite his role in safeguarding the public, Berllaque's actions betrayed the trust placed in him, as he engaged in the abuse of vulnerable children.
The court proceedings revealed that the two victims endured abuse from Berllaque for nearly ten years, beginning in the early 1990s and continuing until 2001.
The details of the offences were presented at Snaresbrook Crown Court, where the gravity of the crimes was made clear.
The court heard that the offences occurred within London, with the victims providing statements that confirmed the abuse.
Berllaque was initially taken into custody on August 28, 2015, after voluntarily attending Luton police station and confessing to the offences.
Following his confession, officers from Bedfordshire Police contacted the Metropolitan Police, who then arranged to interview him further.
The investigation confirmed the victims' accounts, and their statements provided crucial evidence linking Berllaque to the crimes.
It was also disclosed during the trial that Berllaque was a serving officer at the time the offences took place.
However, he only came forward to admit his guilt after he had already left the police force.
Importantly, the court clarified that the offences were not committed while he was on duty, but the betrayal of trust remains a significant aspect of this case.
On Thursday, October 20, at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Berllaque was formally sentenced after previously pleading guilty on August 26.
The court's decision underscores the severity of his crimes and the impact on the victims, highlighting the importance of justice in cases involving abuse by individuals in positions of authority and trust.
