MELVYN KEIGHTLEY FROM MASTIN MOOR ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL IN DERBY
In a case that has shocked the local community of Mastin Moor, Melvyn Keightley, a 53-year-old resident, was found to possess a significant collection of indecent images of children, leading to a court hearing at Derby Crown Court. The investigation was initiated after police conducted a raid on Keightley's home in May of the previous year, uncovering more than 200 illicit images stored on his computer. Among these, 13 images were classified within the most severe categories, specifically categories four and five, which denote the most serious forms of child exploitation material.During the police search, authorities described the images as 'disgusting,' highlighting the disturbing nature of the content Keightley had been viewing. Despite the gravity of the evidence, Keightley maintained his innocence, denying any interest or involvement in child sexual abuse images. However, the evidence was clear, and the images were found on his computer tower, confirming his possession of such material.
Prosecutor Mr. Alex Wolfson outlined the case to the court, emphasizing that Keightley's identity was uncovered through a police operation aimed at tackling online child exploitation. The court was told that the images were not victimless crimes, as viewing such material directly correlates with the abuse of children depicted within the images. Judge John Burgess addressed Keightley directly, expressing his disapproval and disappointment. He stated, “I hope you are thoroughly ashamed of yourself. These are not victimless crimes. Looking at indecent images of children on a computer screen means a child has been abused. They are disgusting.”
Although possession of images in categories four and five typically warrants a prison sentence, Judge Burgess opted for a more rehabilitative approach. He explained that a custodial sentence was not the most constructive punishment in this case and instead imposed a community order. Keightley was sentenced to a three-year community order, which includes supervision for the same period, mandatory attendance at a community sex offenders group program, and a curfew from 7 pm to 7 am for three months.
Furthermore, Keightley, who resides on Thorpleigh Road in Mastin Moor, was placed on the sex offenders register for five years and was subject to a sex offenders prevention order. He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £752. The court's decision reflects a focus on rehabilitation while acknowledging the seriousness of the offense and the need for ongoing supervision and monitoring to protect the community.
