MAURICE BERRY AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN LINCOLNSHIRE AND NORTH YORKSHIRE
The charity organization Action for Children is currently pursuing legal action against Maurice Berry, a convicted sex offender who previously resided in Lincolnshire and was involved in heinous crimes against young girls at a children’s home located in North Yorkshire.Berry, aged 67 at the time of his sentencing, received a 13-year prison term in 2019 following a trial held at York Crown Court.
The court was told that Berry systematically targeted vulnerable children at May Lodge Children’s Home in Scarborough, where he served as the deputy manager.
His criminal activities included entering the girls’ beds at night, touching them inappropriately, exposing himself, and attempting to commit rape on one of the young victims.
Before his arrest, Maurice Berry was living in North SomERCOTES, Lincolnshire.
His apprehension occurred after police investigations were initiated in 2017, prompted by allegations and reports from one or more victims.
The victims, who have since grown into adults, brought their cases forward, leading to Berry's eventual conviction.
Currently, Berry is serving his sentence at HMP Moorland near Doncaster.
The gravity of his crimes has had lasting impacts on the victims, especially the younger girls, who endured physical and emotional trauma.
The two victims, now adult women, have sought damages for personal injury from Action for Children, formerly known as the National Children’s Home, asserting that the organization bears liability for Berry’s offending conduct.
Action for Children is now attempting to recover nearly £160,000 in compensation and legal expenses from Berry.
According to reports, the charity attempted to negotiate a settlement with him; however, Berry has allegedly failed to cooperate or engage in these proceedings.
As a result, the organization has resorted to court action to seek restitution.
The Lincolnite reached out to Action for Children for an official statement regarding this case.
The charity responded by stating that the matter is legal in nature and declined to provide further details or comments at this time.
This case highlights the ongoing issues surrounding child abuse cases, the responsibilities of organizations in safeguarding children, and the difficult legal processes involved in seeking justice and compensation for victims affected by such heinous crimes.
