Spondon Sexual Abuser
In October 2019, a serious incident unfolded involving a known sex offender from Derby, who was ultimately apprehended after a tense confrontation with law enforcement officers. The individual, identified as Matty Matthews, also known by the alias Matty Taylor, was discovered hiding beneath a mattress in a residential property located in Spondon, following a frantic attempt to evade arrest.

The police had arrived at the scene after being alerted that Matthews was present at the property and was attempting to avoid capture. When officers entered the premises, they found Matthews cowering in a bedroom, clearly frightened and attempting to conceal himself. This event occurred after Matthews had fled from a police station earlier that day when officers informed him that he was about to be taken into custody.

Matty Matthews, aged 34, was subject to the conditions of his sex offender register notification, which mandated him to disclose his whereabouts to authorities regularly. However, during the months of August and September, he provided police with multiple different addresses within Derby, claiming to reside at various locations. These included Rivermead House on Bath Street, Arnhem Terrace, and Willowcroft Road in Spondon, which was the residence of his new partner.

Prosecutor Joey Kwong explained that law enforcement officers had visited these addresses and found that Matthews was no longer living at Rivermead House or Arnhem Terrace. On September 25, Matthews approached officers at St Mary’s Wharf and inquired whether he was going to be arrested. When the officer confirmed that an arrest was imminent, Matthews ran away, heading up Prime Parkway in an attempt to escape.

Two days later, police officers visited an address on Willowcroft Road. They spoke with a woman there who denied Matthews was present. However, a subsequent search of the property revealed Matthews hiding beneath a mattress, leading to his arrest. The police confirmed that Matthews was indeed at the residence, despite his earlier denials.

It was also revealed that Matthews had a lengthy criminal history, including serious sexual offences, although specific details of these previous convictions were not disclosed during the court proceedings. Furthermore, he had a notorious record of failing to comply with the conditions of his sex offender registration, having previously served prison sentences of up to three years for breaches of these requirements.

In court, Matthews pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to adhere to the terms of his sex offender register. Recorder Paul Mann QC sentenced him to 18 months in prison, emphasizing Matthews’ troubling history. The judge stated, “You have a bad history of offending so far as sexual offences are concerned and you have a bad history of breaching the terms of your requirements. You have, over recent years, served long prison sentences as a result of this.” The case underscores ongoing concerns about the management and monitoring of sex offenders, especially those with repeated violations and attempts to evade law enforcement.
