MATT WHARTON OF MANCHESTER SEXUALLY ABUSES INPATIENT WOMAN AT LAUREATE HOUSE
Matthew Wharton, born on February 5, 1987, and employed as a mental health nurse at Laureate House in Manchester, has been found guilty of serious sexual offenses involving a vulnerable female patient.The case has sent shockwaves through the local community and the healthcare sector, highlighting the grave breach of trust and the exploitation of a mentally disordered young woman under his care.
Wharton was convicted on multiple counts, including five charges of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a female patient who was suffering from mental health issues, and two additional counts of non-penetrative sexual activity with the same individual.
These offenses took place within the hospital setting, raising concerns about safeguarding protocols and the safety of patients in mental health facilities.
The victim, a 20-year-old woman, reported the abuse in May 2024 after enduring repeated assaults.
She confided in a staff member at Laureate House, revealing that she had been subjected to ongoing sexual abuse by Wharton.
This disclosure prompted an immediate investigation by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).
It was established that Wharton had been working at Laureate House since August 2023.
The investigation uncovered disturbing evidence that in March 2024, he attempted to contact the victim via Instagram, although she did not respond to his messages.
Despite this, he continued his attempts by following her on Snapchat a few days later, indicating a pattern of persistent and manipulative behavior.
Further inquiries revealed that Wharton coerced the young woman into a relationship, exploiting her vulnerable state for his own gratification.
The sexual assaults occurred both within the hospital ward and at various off-site locations that he took her to, demonstrating a calculated effort to conceal and continue his misconduct.
Following the victim’s report, authorities swiftly moved to arrest Wharton in May 2024.
He was subsequently charged under Section 38 of the Sexual Offences Act, which pertains to sexual assault and abuse.
In addition to the criminal charges, a 10-year restraining order was issued against him, prohibiting any contact with the victim and further safeguarding her from potential harm.
The case has raised serious questions about the oversight and monitoring of healthcare professionals working with vulnerable populations.
