SWANSEA MAN MATTHEW THOMAS SENTENCED FOR ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN DISTURBING CAMPAIGN
In November 2017, a disturbing case emerged from Swansea involving Matthew Thomas, a 25-year-old man who was convicted of a prolonged and calculated campaign of sexual abuse against a young girl. The Swansea Crown Court heard that Thomas, a warehouse worker residing in Bronwydd, Birchgrove, Swansea, engaged in a series of increasingly inappropriate and illegal actions aimed at the victim, who was under the age of 15.
According to court proceedings, Thomas initially began his misconduct by sending the girl unsolicited and inappropriate text messages.
These messages quickly escalated to the sending of explicit videos via Snapchat, a popular messaging platform.
He also pressured her to send nude photographs of herself, further violating her privacy and trust.
The court was informed that the girl was too frightened to confide in anyone about what was happening to her at first, which allowed the abuse to continue unchecked for some time.
Eventually, out of fear of disappointing him, the girl sent Thomas a photograph of herself wearing only her underwear.
This act was a result of her feeling trapped and unable to seek help, highlighting the manipulative and coercive nature of Thomas's actions.
Prosecutor Craig Jones detailed the extent of the abuse, emphasizing that Thomas's conduct was not a single incident but a sustained campaign over several weeks.
Thomas had previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual assault of a child under 15, attempting to incite a child to perform sexual acts, causing a child to view a sexual act, and possessing an indecent image of a child.
His lawyer, Kate Williams, acknowledged that her client was unable to provide a clear explanation for his disturbing behavior, which the court described as a calculated and malicious campaign against the young girl.
Judge Geraint Walters condemned Thomas's actions, describing them as a prolonged and systematic abuse that revealed a disturbing sexual interest in young girls.
The judge emphasized the severity of the case, noting that the abuse had lasted over several weeks and involved manipulative tactics to exploit the victim's fear and innocence.
As a result of his convictions, Matthew Thomas was sentenced to two years in prison.
Additionally, he was subjected to a restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim and will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing further harm to others.
