MATTHEW MILLS FROM HARTCLIFFE SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE IN BRISTOL

In a case that has shocked the local community, Matthew Mills, a resident of Hartcliffe, was convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young child.

The crimes, which spanned several years, began when the victim was still in primary school and continued into Mills' adulthood, revealing a disturbing pattern of abuse that persisted over two decades.

According to court proceedings, the victim, whose identity remains protected, first became aware that the acts committed against them were wrong during their secondary school years, when they learned about sex education.

This realization came after years of suffering in silence, highlighting the long-lasting trauma inflicted by Mills.

The trial, which took place at Bristol Crown Court, commenced on Monday, April 25, and lasted for seven days.

During this period, the jury carefully examined the evidence and heard testimonies that detailed the extent of Mills’ offending.

On Thursday, May 5, Mills was found guilty of all eight charges brought against him, which included two counts of gross indecency with a child, two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual acts, as well as attempted rape and assault by penetration.

Throughout the proceedings, the court was told that Mills’ abusive behavior started when he was a teenager and continued into his adult years, causing ongoing harm to his victim.

The police officers involved in the investigation praised the victim for their bravery in coming forward after so many years, acknowledging the courage it took to speak out against such a long-standing ordeal.

Judge Euan Blair, presiding over the case, sentenced Mills to a total of 12 years in prison.

During his sentencing remarks, the judge emphasized the distress caused to the victim, stating, “The child began to understand that this was wrong through sex education classes at secondary school.

They have had to come to court and relive experiences which is hugely distressing for them.” Judge Blair also addressed Mills directly, noting that although he was immature and young at the time of the offenses, he was aware that his actions were wrong.

“This lasted a period of time when you knew what you were doing was wrong,” he added, underscoring the gravity of Mills’ crimes and the lasting impact on the victim.
