A 34-year-old man from Redruth has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for multiple acts of violent rape. Matthew James Gardner was convicted after a trial held in January at Truro Crown Court, where he faced 14 charges that included nine counts of rape, assault by penetration, and four additional charges. During the sentencing on Thursday, September 19, Gardner was ordered to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence and is required to register as a sex offender for life.The trial revealed that Gardner terrorized his victim, employing tactics of intimidation and fear. He assaulted her despite her being unwell on one occasion and forcibly inserted a sock into her mouth during another assault. The attacks were described as physically violent and degrading, leaving the victim in significant pain. Gardner claimed that all sexual encounters were consensual, but the court found otherwise based on the evidence presented.Detective Constable Joanne Sodergren and Detective Constable Emma Sandry from Devon and Cornwall Police overseen the case, expressed satisfaction that Gardner’s sentencing brings some closure to the victim. They praised her for her bravery and resilience, acknowledging that her cooperation was crucial to achieving justice.
