WAKEFIELD PAEDOPHILE MATTHEW GRIFFITHS CAUGHT BY HUNTER GROUP IN ONLINE PREDATOR STING
In April 2022, a disturbing case unfolded involving Matthew Griffiths, a resident of Wakefield, who was caught attempting to engage in illegal sexual activities with a person he believed to be a 12-year-old girl. The incident was part of an undercover operation conducted by a vigilant hunter group aiming to expose online predators targeting minors.
According to reports presented at Leeds Crown Court, Griffiths believed he was communicating with a young girl over the internet.
During the exchanges, he claimed to be from Wakefield and was told by the supposed minor that she was from Newcastle.
Throughout their conversation, Griffiths was repeatedly informed that she was only 12 years old, yet he continued to pursue the interaction with inappropriate and sexual intentions.
He asked her personal questions about her clothing, specifically inquiring about her nightwear, and went further to request that she remove her nightie.
The predator then pressed for her to perform sexual acts on herself, demonstrating a clear intent to exploit a minor.
The following morning, Griffiths woke up and sent her additional messages filled with suggestive comments, further indicating his predatory mindset.
However, the entire interaction was part of a sting operation.
The hunter group, having identified Griffiths, confronted him later that day and promptly contacted the police.
Authorities swiftly responded, arresting Griffiths at his residence on Annie Street, Outwood.
During police interviews at Normanton Police Station, Griffiths initially claimed he believed the girl was 18 years old, a denial that was ultimately contradicted by the evidence and the context of the conversation.
He was charged with two counts of attempting to incite a child into sexual activity.
The court proceedings revealed the full extent of his intentions and actions, leading to a serious sentencing.
Judge Mushtaq Khokhar sentenced Griffiths to 28 months in prison, emphasizing the gravity of the case.
The judge remarked, "It was a decoy but just imagine if it was a 12-year-old.
It was quite clear what was in your mind.
She pointed out right from the start she was 12.
The sentence can’t be suspended I’m afraid." In addition to his prison term, Griffiths was ordered to sign the sex offenders register for a period of ten years.
He was also subjected to a ten-year sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his access to the internet and grants authorities the authority to monitor any electronic devices he may possess, aiming to prevent further offenses and protect potential victims.
