YORK COUPLE MATTHEW FOX AND KATHERINE SLYM SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 14-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN HUDDERSFIELD HOTEL
In December 2018, a disturbing case involving a couple from York, Matthew Fox and Katherine Slym, culminated in their sentencing for the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl.The incident took place in a hotel located in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, where the pair lured the young girl into a situation that would lead to criminal charges.
Both Fox, aged 36, and Slym, aged 33, were found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor under the age of 16, as well as participating in sexual acts in the presence of a child.
The court proceedings revealed that the couple had invited the girl, whom they had previously groomed, back to their hotel room after a day of socializing.
The pair, who were reportedly intoxicated at the time, had a lengthy conversation with the girl earlier that day, during which they discussed tattoos and body piercings, and even took selfies with her on their mobile phones.
During this conversation, the girl explicitly disclosed her age, stating she was only 14 years old.
Despite this, Fox and Slym proceeded to engage in sexual activities with her, and shockingly, they also had sex with each other in front of her.
The court heard that the girl consumed alcohol and smoked cigarettes while in the hotel room with the couple, further highlighting the inappropriate and exploitative nature of the encounter.
Authorities became involved after the girl confided in a friend about what had transpired.
The police investigation led to the couple’s arrest, and both Fox and Slym admitted to the charges in court.
They pleaded guilty to the offences of sexual activity with a child under 16 and engaging in sexual acts in the presence of a minor.
As a consequence of their actions, the couple faced significant legal repercussions.
They were both sentenced to 20 months in prison by Judge Robin Mairs at Leeds Crown Court.
The judge emphasized the gravity of the case, noting that the girl described herself as being used and that the incident was prolonged.
He pointed out the clear grooming element involved and the disparity in age between the offenders and the victim.
Furthermore, the court ordered Fox and Slym to register as sex offenders for a period of ten years.
The sentencing also had personal repercussions for Slym, who lost her job as a result of her convictions.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of grooming and sexual exploitation of minors, and it underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable young individuals from predatory behavior.
