SWANSEA NHS MANAGER MATTHEW FISHER SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLGIRL IN SWANSEA AND GORSEINON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Swansea, a respected NHS manager named Matthew Fisher has been convicted of sexually abusing a young girl nearly two decades ago.The abuse, which took place in the early 2000s, involved multiple assaults on a 15-year-old girl at various locations across the county, including the grounds of a well-known wedding venue.
The victim, now an adult, recounted her traumatic experience during a court hearing, revealing the lasting impact that Fisher's actions have had on her life.
According to court proceedings, the abuse occurred over a period of approximately 12 months.
Fisher, who at the time was managing the popular Riley’s snooker hall in Gorseinon, subjected the young girl to repeated sexual assaults.
The incidents were committed at several sites, notably including Manor Park in Clydach.
The prosecutor, Tim Evans, detailed that Fisher’s misconduct was not limited to a single occasion but happened multiple times, with the victim recalling one particular incident where Fisher smirked at her during the assault.
Fisher, now aged 44 and residing at Penrhos Place, Gendros, Swansea, was also accused of threatening the girl to keep silent about the abuse, warning her that if she told anyone, he would end up in prison.
The abuse was not reported at the time, but the victim eventually came forward after a chance encounter with Fisher at a hospital in 2012.
It was during this meeting that she disclosed her ordeal to the authorities.
In her impact statement, read aloud in court, the woman expressed how the abuse robbed her of her childhood and early adulthood.
She explained that the trauma had severely affected her mental health, leading her to rely on anti-depressant medication since her teenage years.
She described her feelings of helplessness, stating, “like there is no escape from painful memories,” and expressed her wish to erase Fisher from her mind.
The victim also shared her regret that the abuse caused her to give up on her education and hindered her personal development.
Fisher pleaded guilty to six counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child during his court appearance.
Judge Geraint Walters acknowledged the gravity of the offenses, emphasizing that Fisher’s repeated assaults over a prolonged period had a profound and lasting effect on the victim.
The judge noted the complexity of sentencing due to the different types of offenses and the sentencing regimes applicable at the time.
Taking into account Fisher’s guilty pleas, the judge granted a one-third reduction in his sentence.
He sentenced Fisher to two years in prison for each of the seven counts, with all sentences to run concurrently, resulting in an overall term of two years.
Additionally, Fisher will be required to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct in the community.
