MATTHEW APPLETON FROM GLOUCESTER CAUGHT IN SHOCKING ONLINE SEXUAL PLOT IN LEEDS
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Matthew Appleton, a resident of Gloucester, was caught in a serious online misconduct involving a paedophile hunting group.The incident unfolded after Appleton engaged in a series of illicit communications with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl, but was in fact an adult member of the vigilant group T.G.A.
The confrontation took place on his doorstep, where members of the group, known as the Guardian Angels, confronted him with evidence of his actions.
The case was heard at Leeds Crown Court, revealing the disturbing details of Appleton's online behavior.
Prosecutor Robert Stevenson outlined that the defendant first made contact with the supposed victim via a media messaging app on October 23, 2018.
During their initial exchange, Appleton believed he was speaking to a young girl named Jade, and he complimented her by saying she had pretty eyes.
Despite being informed during their conversations that Jade was only 12 years old, Appleton continued to pursue the interaction.
Five days after their initial contact, Appleton re-engaged with Jade, again despite being told her age.
He then explicitly asked her for naked photographs, justifying his request by claiming, “I am 16 so it’s ok.” The prosecutor emphasized that Appleton’s behavior escalated as he sent the girl sexual images and videos of himself, further demonstrating his intent to engage in inappropriate and illegal conduct.
On November 2, 2018, Appleton contacted Jade once more, this time asking her to meet him in Leeds.
The following day, he was confronted at his family home by nine members of the paedophile hunting group, who had gathered evidence including screenshots of his messages.
Confronted with this proof, Appleton admitted to sending the explicit images.
Authorities were promptly notified, leading to his arrest.
During the court proceedings, Appleton, now residing at Hildyard Close in Gloucester, pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to cause a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity and attempting to incite a girl under 13 to look at sexual material.
The court was informed that he is willing to participate in a sex offender treatment program to reduce the risk of re-offending in the future.
In sentencing, Judge Andrew Stubbs QC handed down a two-year prison sentence, which was suspended for two years.
Additionally, Appleton was placed under a community order, requiring him to complete a 25-day rehabilitation activity.
He is also mandated to perform 120 hours of unpaid work and will be on the sex offender register for ten years.
The judge emphasized the importance of professional intervention, stating, “The best way of for everybody to deal with that risk is for you to engage with the professionals who can deal with you.”
