MARTYN REES AND HIS SHOCKING SEXUAL OFFENCES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT
A chilling case of sexual abuse has come to light involving Martyn Rees, a driving instructor from Stoke-on-Trent, who has been convicted of a series of heinous crimes that include the sexual assault of a teenage girl.The conviction was finalized at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday, March 22, after a detailed and lengthy trial.
Rees, aged 37, faced numerous charges related to his exploitation and abuse of vulnerable individuals.
The court found him guilty of multiple sexual offences, which encompass the rape of a minor, two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child, sexual assault, and two attempted sexual assaults.
In addition, the jury convicted him of possessing six indecent photographs of a child, and of keeping an extreme pornographic image.
These disturbing acts took place over a span of three years, from 2015 to 2018.
Prior to the verdict, Rees had pleaded guilty to certain charges in a separate hearing.
He admitted to assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault, four counts of making indecent images of a child, and possession of cannabis.
The victims involved ranged in age from just 14 to 25 years old, highlighting the disturbing and broad scope of his misconduct.
The allegations against him surfaced following an incident on March 8, when Rees was arrested after reports emerged that a 14-year-old girl had been raped.
Subsequent examinations of his mobile phone revealed numerous indecent images of children, which further implicated him and led to the identification of additional victims.
The evidence found also pointed to the possibility that Rees had continued his offending behavior for several years.
Rees, whose residence is listed as West Avenue in Stoke, has not been able to work as a driving instructor since March 2018, likely due to the ongoing investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.
The police investigation was significantly boosted by the discovery of illicit images on his device, which also prompted his rearrest and further inquiry.
Detective Inspector Simon Caton from Staffordshire Police's Child Protection and Exploitation Team addressed the case publicly, emphasizing the abuse of trust involved.
He stated that Rees had used his role as a trusted driving instructor to sexually exploit his pupils.
The Inspector added that Rees's attack against the vulnerable 14-year-old girl was a direct consequence of a chance encounter.
The police official urged any other potential victims to come forward, assuring them that their reports would be taken seriously and that support from specially-trained detectives and social workers would be provided.
Detective Inspector Caton emphasized the importance of speaking out, even if victims are not yet ready to do so, and encouraged those affected to confide in someone they trust.
Rees remains in custody, having been remanded following his conviction.
He is scheduled to be sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court at a later date, though the specific date has yet to be determined.
The case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse, especially by those entrusted with their safety and education.
