LEICESTER PAEDOPHILE MARTYN BARRON, FORMER JEHOVAH'S WITNESS ELDER, SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Leicester community, Martyn Barron, a 55-year-old former elder of the Jehovah's Witnesses, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the sexual abuse of a young girl.

The incident, which took place over a decade ago, has left a lasting scar on the victim, who is now an adult and has spoken openly about the profound impact the abuse has had on her life.

Leicester Crown Court heard that Barron, residing on Walton Street in the Belgrave area, pleaded guilty to four counts of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 13.

The court was informed that the abuse occurred more than ten years prior to his conviction.

The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, described how the trauma has haunted her into adulthood, emphasizing the devastating effect it has had on her emotional and psychological well-being.

During the sentencing hearing, Recorder Adrian Reynolds expressed his deep concern over Barron’s actions, questioning how someone who publicly professes a belief in God could commit such acts.

The judge highlighted the betrayal of trust involved, noting that Barron was once a respected figure within his religious community, holding a senior position akin to that of a pastor.

Barron’s community had already disfellowshipped him following his guilty plea, stripping him of his standing within the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

The court was told that Barron attempted to shift blame onto the victim in a pre-sentence report, suggesting a level of self-justification that the judge found particularly troubling.

The judge remarked on Barron’s apparent belief that the victim was responsible for the abuse, a mindset that the court described as characteristic of individuals with paedophilic tendencies.

Prosecutor Steven Taylor recounted that the victim was approximately 10 or 11 years old when Barron first touched her inappropriately.

The girl confided in someone years later, which led her parents to discover the abuse.

When questioned by authorities, Barron admitted to the misconduct but claimed he believed the girl was closer to 15 at the time.

During police interviews in August of the previous year, Barron acknowledged multiple sexual incidents but maintained he thought the victim was around 13, attempting to justify his actions.

He also suggested that the girl had encouraged his advances, a claim that was firmly rejected by the victim.

Barron’s defense lawyer, Michael Garvey, pointed out that Barron had no prior criminal record and had been a longstanding elder within the Jehovah’s Witness community, where he was known for helping others and offering support.

Garvey argued that Barron’s behavior was influenced by his role and the pressures associated with it, and that he had since accepted the harm caused to the victim.

However, the court made it clear that Barron’s actions had irreparably damaged his standing within the church and his personal life.

Barron had resigned from his engineering job, which involved visiting schools, citing concerns about explaining his whereabouts to authorities and his employer.

His wife, who has a disability, relies on him as her carer, and his incarceration will undoubtedly make life more difficult for her.

As part of his sentence, Barron was issued an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, prohibiting him from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under 16.

Additionally, he will remain on the sex offender register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect potential future victims.
