EASTBOURNE MAN MARTIN YATES JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE MATERIAL ON DARK WEB SITE THE ANNEX

A man from Eastbourne, identified as Martin Yates, has been sentenced to five years and four months in prison after being found guilty of involvement in hosting and moderating a dark web site dedicated to child sexual abuse.

The investigation, carried out by the National Crime Agency (NCA), uncovered Yates's role in a notorious online platform known as The Annex, which was responsible for facilitating the sharing and discussion of some of the most heinous forms of abuse material involving children.

Yates, aged 48, served as an assistant moderator on The Annex from January to September 2020.

His position placed him just below the site's head moderator, Nathan Bake, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison last week.

The site, which is now defunct, boasted a membership of approximately 90,000 users worldwide.

It was a hub for the exchange of extremely disturbing content, including hurtcore and the sexual abuse of infants and toddlers.

The platform was operated by an American individual, who received a life sentence in the United States in January.

Additionally, Kabir Garg, a psychiatrist based in London, was implicated in the operation and sentenced to six years last summer.

Yates played a crucial role in maintaining the site's functionality.

His responsibilities included enforcing community rules by promoting or banning users, granting access to private sections of the site, and advising on security measures to evade law enforcement detection.

He also provided training to other moderators, sharing knowledge he had received himself.

Despite his careful work on the platform, Yates was less cautious about his personal security.

His username on The Annex was 'yates704,' and chat logs recovered by the NCA revealed that he disclosed his first name, age, and confirmed that he resided in Eastbourne.

Further investigations uncovered that Yates's online activity extended beyond The Annex.

His username appeared on HACKFORUMS.NET, a public forum dedicated to hacking and cybersecurity discussions.

The NCA examined over 6,000 private messages exchanged between Yates and other users of The Annex.

These messages ranged from roleplay scenarios involving the sexual abuse of children to more operational discussions about moderating the site, including advice on how to upload indecent images of children and techniques to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.

Using the information gathered from these communications, along with associated email addresses, authorities tracked Yates down and arrested him at his residence in Eastbourne in July 2022.

During police interviews, Yates fully admitted to controlling his moderator account, confirming his role in The Annex, and acknowledging that he had shared child abuse material as part of his duties.

In November of the previous year, Yates appeared at Hastings Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to six charges.

These included facilitating or arranging the sexual abuse of children, creating and distributing indecent images of minors, and possessing prohibited images.

Today, at Lewes Crown Court, he was sentenced to a term of five years and four months in prison.

Additionally, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life and ordered to comply with a lifetime Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Jen Cruickshank, the Senior Investigating Officer from the NCA, emphasized the importance of Yates's role in sustaining The Annex.

She stated, "The Annex simply wouldn’t have been able to run without people like Martin Yates.

He played a pivotal role in maintaining its upkeep and ensuring users from across the globe could continue accessing its horrific content, without coming to the attention of law enforcement." Cruickshank further highlighted that sites like The Annex openly encourage users to commit sexual offenses against children, with operators and participants often believing they are protected by anonymity.

However, the NCA remains committed to tracking down and prosecuting those involved, leveraging advanced technical capabilities and international cooperation to bring offenders like Yates to justice.
