MARTIN WRIGHT SENTENCED IN LONDON FOR DECADES-OLD SEXUAL OFFENCES AGAINST TEENAGE GIRLS
In a significant case that has spanned decades, Martin Wright, a 55-year-old man from Greenwich, London, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences committed against two young girls during the late 1980s and early 1990s.The sentencing took place at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, 26 May, following a conviction on multiple counts of rape and indecent assault.
Wright was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of indecent assault concerning the first victim, referred to in court documents as 'Victim 1.' For the second victim, known as 'Victim 2,' he was convicted of four counts of rape and six counts of indecent assault.
Both victims, who were teenagers at the time of the offences, did not know each other, and their cases were brought together in the trial due to the similarities in their experiences and the timeline of the abuse.
The first victim came forward in 2014, more than two decades after the abuse occurred.
She provided police with a detailed account of her ordeal, recalling how Wright had entered her bedroom during a party when she was a teenager.
At that time, Wright was in his late 20s.
She described how he had begun to touch her under her clothing and kissed her, attempting to justify his actions by claiming it was what “big girls” did.
A few days later, Wright visited her at her home and raped her.
During this encounter, he told her that no one would believe her if she told anyone, which led her to suffer in silence for 25 years before finally summoning the courage to report the abuse to authorities.
The second victim, now an adult, confided in a friend about her past experiences, revealing that she had been sexually abused by Wright during her childhood.
This disclosure prompted police to investigate further.
She was able to describe in detail how Wright had raped and assaulted her when she was a teenager, confirming her allegations.
The police are actively seeking to identify any additional victims who may have suffered at Wright’s hands but have not yet come forward.
As part of their efforts, authorities have released an image of Wright from the 1980s in hopes of encouraging other victims to come forward and seek justice.
Wright’s case highlights the importance of perseverance and courage in bringing long-standing offenders to justice, and the authorities continue to urge anyone with information or additional victims to come forward to ensure that justice is fully served.
