TORQUAY CHEF MARTIN SMITH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN EXETER
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Torquay, a local chef named Martin Smith has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing a young child. The conviction was secured during a trial held at Exeter Crown Court in February, where Smith, aged 36, faced serious charges related to his misconduct.
The allegations came to light when the young victim disclosed to an adult that Smith had touched her inappropriately.
Despite Smith's initial denial of any wrongdoing, the jury carefully examined the evidence presented and ultimately found him guilty of four out of six charges, including the serious offence of assaulting a child under 13 by penetration.
Following the verdict, Smith appeared in court again on Friday, April 21, for sentencing.
The judge, David Evans, sentenced him to a total of eight years in prison, with an additional 12 months on licence to be served upon release.
The judge emphasized the severity of the offences, noting that the abuse had occurred on multiple occasions, causing significant psychological trauma to the victim.
Judge Evans expressed his disappointment that Smith continued to deny the offences, stating, “It is clear you have caused very significant psychological trauma.
You are still denying the offences.” The court also noted that there was little mitigation available to reduce the sentence, reflecting the gravity of the crimes committed.
Under the terms of his sentence, Smith is required to serve at least two-thirds of the eight-year term before he can be considered for parole.
The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Torquay, highlighting the importance of vigilance and swift justice in protecting vulnerable children from abuse.
