MARTIN RICHARDS AND HIS HORRIFIC CRIMES IN NORTHUMBERLAND
A man who inflicted unimaginable suffering on a young girl in Northumberland has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term, thanks to the bravery and resilience of his victim.Martin Richards, a 50-year-old man from Windsor Terrace, Choppington, was convicted of a series of heinous crimes involving a schoolgirl over a span of two years.
Richards, who is HIV positive, engaged in a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse against the young girl, manipulating her into silence and hiding his actions for an extended period.
His predatory behavior only came to light when the victim, summoning her courage, confided in her mother about the abuse.
Her mother responded swiftly, contacting the police to report the matter.
Following the report, authorities from Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding department launched a thorough investigation into the allegations.
The investigation led to the arrest of Richards in March of the same year.
During questioning, Richards was charged with multiple offences related to his abuse of the girl.
He was remanded in custody while awaiting trial.
In an attempt to influence the case, Richards wrote several letters to the victim’s family, seeking to have the charges dropped.
Despite his efforts, the case proceeded through the courts.
Richards appeared at Newcastle Crown Court, where he entered a guilty plea to three counts of sexual assault on a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and perverting the course of justice.
However, he denied other serious charges, including rape, sexual assault, and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The jury, after a trial, found him guilty of these additional charges, confirming his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
On the day of sentencing, Richards was brought back before the same court.
The judge sentenced him to 22 years in prison, with the requirement that he serve at least two-thirds of his sentence behind bars before being eligible for parole.
In addition to his imprisonment, Richards was issued an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a Restraining Order, and was ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and bravery among victims of abuse, and the justice system’s commitment to holding offenders accountable for their actions in Northumberland.
