PAEDOPHILE MARTIN PUGH, 58, JAILED FOR ABUSING GIRL AND DESCRIBED AS 'WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING'

A convicted paedophile who coerced a young girl into performing a sexual act upon him was described by his victim as a "wolf in sheep's clothing." The abuse remained concealed for many years after he threatened to take his own life if she disclosed what had happened.

Martin Pugh, aged 58 and from Newport, was found guilty of gross indecency with a child following a trial.

He denied committing the crimes against his victim, who courageously addressed the court, vowing, "the man who deceived everyone." During a hearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday, it was revealed that his victim was only 10 years old at the time of the abuse.

She described how an image of Pugh's face during the assault continued to "haunt her." Years later, she confronted Pugh about the incident, prompting him to threaten to "kill himself" if she told anyone.

Nevertheless, she eventually contacted police and disclosed the abuse she had endured, leading to Pugh’s conviction.

The defendant, of Chester Close, Caerleon, was convicted of gross indecency with a minor.

The court also noted that he had four prior convictions for assault causing actual bodily harm.

In a victim impact statement read aloud by prosecutor Andrew Davies, the woman said: "I was vulnerable and desperately seeking safety.

Instead of protection, I was abused during a time I needed love most—he exploited that...

I wish I had known then what I know now.

I wish I had spoken out earlier, but like many children, I carried the shame, fear, and burden alone." "As an adult, I began to understand what his actions truly meant, and I felt disgusted and angry at myself for being so naive...

He gave me cigarettes, spliffs, and alcohol, and I never fully understood his motives." "Flashbacks torment me and make me feel ill; I constantly question why I endured this.

When I realized he only cared about protecting himself or concealing the truth rather than the pain he caused me, I knew I had to speak out.

He has never taken responsibility or shown remorse." "Only recently have I grasped the full extent of what happened, and I now see it clearly.

I spent my entire life seeking love and safety.

My husband has given me the support to confide in someone, face this trauma, and begin healing." "He was like a wolf in sheep's clothing—the man who fooled everyone." "What occurred has broken me.

I am only now starting to rebuild my life, learning boundaries and realizing what I am not obligated to do.

I accept that I will never entirely recover from what I endured; it has affected every aspect of my life, influenced my decisions, and shaped my coping strategies." In mitigation, Julia Cox argued that her client was suffering from numerous health problems, including throat cancer.

She stated that he had run a successful business, but his imprisonment would negatively impact his livelihood.

Judge Daniel Williams addressed the court, saying: "You maintain your innocence.

As (the victim) described, you are a wolf in sheep's clothing—a man who deceived everyone.

You did not fool the jury; they saw through your courtroom performance, which you repeated today.

You show no remorse; your actions are entirely about self-preservation." Pugh was sentenced to serve six years and six months in prison.
