MARTIN PARKER AND SHOCKING ONLINE CHILD OFFENCE IN SOMERSET

An elderly man from Somerset was convicted of attempting to engage in illegal activities involving a young girl through online communications.

Martin Parker, aged 76 and residing in Evercreech, was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison.

His sentence includes an initial four-year custodial period, followed by an additional five years of supervised release on licence.

The evidence that led to Parker’s conviction was based on electronic communications he sent in the months of February and March this year.

Authorities gathered substantial proof indicating that Parker had exchanged numerous messages with the intent of arranging a meeting with a young girl for the purpose of sexual abuse.

The investigation uncovered that Parker was actively trying to facilitate a situation where he could commit these illegal acts.

Parker was arrested in May, at his home address in Evercreech, after police executed a warrant and took him into custody.

During the legal proceedings, he admitted to one count of attempting to arrange for a child under the age of 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Importantly, Parker was unaware that his online activities were being monitored by police, which allowed investigators to intervene before any actual children were put at further risk.

Following his arrest, Parker was remanded in custody and appeared before Taunton Crown Court for sentencing.

On July 19, the judge sentenced him to nine years in prison.

In addition to his prison term, Parker was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future conduct, and he will be registered as a sex offender for life.

During the court proceedings, His Honour Judge Edward Burgess described Parker’s actions as ‘utterly despicable and contemptuous,’ emphasizing the seriousness of his crime and the harm such conduct causes to vulnerable young victims.

Commenting on the case, Temporary Detective Sergeant Harvey Ahern, who was involved in the investigation, stated: “At Avon and Somerset Police, we are committed to protecting children and pursuing those who seek to exploit them, whether through online platforms or physical interactions.

There are no safe spaces for offenders, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring them to justice.”
