COVENTRY CARE WORKER MARTIN OZOLS SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN WARWICKSHIRE
In July 2012, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse emerged involving Martin Ozols, a care worker from Coventry, West Midlands, who was convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a vulnerable teenage girl from the North-East.The incident came to light after another girl residing at the same children’s home raised concerns about Ozols’ inappropriate behavior, prompting an investigation that uncovered a pattern of abuse.
Ozols, aged 60 at the time, had been employed as a caregiver at a residential facility in Warwickshire, which specializes in caring for children with troubled backgrounds or learning difficulties.
His employment began in July 2009, but he was suspended from his duties twelve months later when allegations surfaced.
The court proceedings revealed that Ozols had developed a relationship with a 15-year-old girl, whom he convinced she was his future wife.
The girl believed Ozols loved her, as evidenced by the Valentine’s Day card he gave her, along with an engagement ring, and his repeated assurances that they would marry.
Prosecutor Matthew Brook explained that the girl was particularly vulnerable due to her background, which was detailed in a report presented during the trial.
She confided to police that Ozols had first engaged in sexual activity with her on the back seat of a minibus belonging to the children’s home.
This incident occurred after the vehicle stopped in a layby while Ozols was driving her back from a visit to her family in Middlesbrough.
The girl recounted that Ozols warned her that if their relationship was discovered, he would face imprisonment and she would be placed in a secure unit, a prospect that terrified her.
Over the course of their relationship, Ozols had sex with the girl on up to seven occasions.
The court heard that the abuse was not only predatory but also manipulative, exploiting her vulnerability and trust.
During the trial, Ozols admitted to two counts of sexual activity with a child, as well as charges related to the possession and downloading of indecent images of children.
His defense argued that his employment history, which spanned over 30 years working with children in various professions, did not suggest any prior misconduct.
Judge Robert Orme sentenced Ozols to four years in prison for the sexual offenses.
In his remarks, the judge condemned Ozols for abusing his position of trust, stating, “You exploited your position at that institution.
She was 15 and highly vulnerable, and you exploited that to take advantage of her.” Additionally, Ozols received a six-month sentence for the possession of indecent images of children, which he also admitted.
The court ordered him to register as a sex offender for life and imposed a sexual offences prevention order that prohibits him from having any contact or communication with children under the age of 16, aiming to prevent further harm and protect potential victims.
