SUNDERLAND MAN MARTIN KIRKWOOD CAUGHT BY ONLINE PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Sunderland, a man named Martin Kirkwood was caught in a sting operation after attempting to engage in inappropriate conversations with what he believed was a 14-year-old girl. The incident unfolded over several months, with Kirkwood initially initiating contact on social media platforms in May of the previous year, under the impression that he was speaking to a minor named Louise.
During their online exchanges, Kirkwood made increasingly explicit requests, including asking the decoy to touch his penis and referring to her as 'sexy.' Despite being told that the person he was speaking to was at school, Kirkwood persisted in his inappropriate advances.
The profile he was communicating with was not genuine but was a decoy set up by Guardians of the North, an organization dedicated to exposing adults seeking to exploit children.
Prosecutor Jolyn Perks outlined to Newcastle Crown Court that the conversations did not turn sexual until February of this year, when Kirkwood resumed contact with the decoy.
During this period, the decoy, posing as Louise, expressed her dislike of being 14 and returning to school.
It was at this point that Kirkwood's messages became more explicit.
He referred to the decoy as 'sexy,' expressed a desire to be in bed with her, and invited her to engage in dirty talk.
Further, Kirkwood asked if she had felt a 'willy' before, attached kisses to his messages, and requested topless photographs.
He also sent a photograph of his own genitals to the decoy, asking if she liked it and whether she wanted to see one in real life.
The defendant then organized a meeting scheduled for March 4, 2018, claiming that she could touch his penis if she met him.
However, he later canceled the arrangement, citing the need to reschedule.
Members of Guardians of the North, having identified Kirkwood's address, visited his home on March 6 to confront him directly.
They also contacted the police, leading to his arrest.
Kirkwood, residing at Eden Terrace in Sunderland, admitted to attempting to engage in sexual conversations with a child between February 23 and March 5, 2018.
During the court proceedings, defense lawyer Alec Burns stated that Kirkwood was motivated by thoughts of his own daughter and that he had a change of heart about his actions.
Despite this, the judge, Mr.
Recorder Wood, emphasized the gravity of Kirkwood's conduct, noting that his continued contact with the decoy after being reminded of her age was wholly inappropriate and criminal.
The judge highlighted the potential harm that could have resulted had intervention not occurred, underscoring the importance of safeguarding children from such predatory behavior.
As a result, Kirkwood was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years, with a requirement to undergo rehabilitation.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and to adhere to a sexual harm prevention order for the next seven years, reflecting the serious nature of his offenses.
