MARTIN HOLMES FROM PETERBOROUGH SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN OXFORDSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the local community and garnered significant media attention, Martin Holmes, a resident of Peterborough, was convicted of multiple serious sexual offences involving a young boy in a south Oxfordshire village.The proceedings, which unfolded at Oxford Crown Court, revealed a disturbing pattern of abuse that spanned several years, beginning when the victim was just nine years old.
Holmes, who was 36 at the time of sentencing, was initially sentenced in May to a 15-year prison term after being found guilty of 14 counts of sexual assault and related offences.
The court heard that Holmes had begun abusing the boy in the mid-2000s, during which he was a teenager, and the abuse continued into the boy’s mid-teens.
The offences included sexual assault of a child under-13 by penetration, sexual activity with a child, and other related charges.
The jury’s verdict was delivered after a detailed trial where Holmes maintained his innocence, denying all allegations and claiming that the victim was fabricating the story.
During the sentencing, Judge Michael Gledhill QC expressed his condemnation of Holmes, emphasizing the defendant’s lack of remorse.
He stated, “You have denied the offences from the moment you were confronted with them until this very day.
You do not accept that you’ve done anything wrong.
You do not accept you’ve committed any criminal offences, let alone sexually abusing this boy over these years.
You say he is a complete liar and has made this all up.
You’ve shown not one iota of remorse for what you did.” Further details emerged about Holmes’s background, including that he had befriended the victim’s parents and was considered somewhat of an outsider in his community.
Prosecutor Laura Blackband described how Holmes ‘singled out’ his victim and groomed him, using manipulative tactics to establish a sexual relationship.
The abuse reportedly began with the boy touching Holmes and escalated over time until Holmes moved away from the area, ending the offending.
Holmes’s actions left the victim deeply traumatized.
The young man, now in his twenties, was visibly distressed in court, crying as the verdict was read.
His supporters, including his mother, also showed emotional reactions.
The victim’s family expressed feelings of betrayal and regret, trusting Holmes initially, only to be let down by his actions.
The court heard that Holmes had attempted to contact the victim’s father via social media, which further compounded the sense of betrayal.
In addition to the prison sentence, Holmes was subjected to a lifelong restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim’s family.
He will serve at least two-thirds of his 15-year sentence before being eligible for release, after which he will be under supervision for the remainder of his extended sentence.
The court also declared Holmes a sex offender for life, imposing strict conditions to protect the community.
