MARTIN GRANT FROM HALIFAX SENTENCED AFTER SEX WITH 14-YEAR-OLD BOY AT HALIFAX BUS STATION

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Martin Grant, a 25-year-old man from Halifax who is currently without a fixed address, has been handed down a sentence following his involvement in a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old boy.

The incident occurred after the two had communicated via Facebook, leading to a meeting at Halifax bus station in October of the previous year.

During the proceedings at Bradford Crown Court, it was revealed that the young boy, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, believed himself to be homosexual.

The court heard that the two had exchanged messages discussing sexual topics over Facebook prior to their meeting.

The boy later told police that he believed all sexual activity was consensual and did not see himself as a victim in the situation.

Grant, who had no prior convictions related to sexual offences, admitted to the allegations concerning sexual activity with a minor.

It was also disclosed that he had already served four months in custody while awaiting trial, which his legal representative, Nigel Hamilton, argued was equivalent to an eight-month sentence.

Grant himself accepted full legal and moral responsibility for his actions.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC acknowledged the complexity of the case when it came to sentencing.

He emphasized that the law is designed to protect young individuals at a critical stage of development, regardless of their own perceptions or willingness.

The judge stated, “They are at a formative stage and adults simply cannot, as it were, take advantage however willing the youngsters are.” As part of his sentence, Grant was placed under a three-year community order.

This includes mandatory assessments for a sex offender treatment program and a five-year sexual offences prevention order, which restricts his contact with anyone under the age of 16.

Additionally, Grant is required to register as a sex offender with police authorities for the next five years.

Judge Durham Hall explained that the probation service had supported the decision to impose a community-based sentence rather than imprisonment, noting that if Grant were sent back to custody, he would likely be released within a few months.

The judge also issued a stern warning, emphasizing that Grant would not be given any further chances if he committed additional offences.

He remarked, “(The boy) was very willing,” and pointed out that Grant, despite some hesitancy, ultimately engaged in sexual activity with the young man, inviting the situation and seeking gratification.

Overall, the case underscores the legal and moral boundaries that protect minors from exploitation, regardless of their own perceptions or consent, and highlights the careful considerations courts must weigh when sentencing offenders involved in such sensitive cases.
