MARTIN GEARY CAUGHT IN BRIDGWATER PAEDOPHILE HUNTING OPERATION AND SENTENCED AT TAUNTON CROWN COURT
In January 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving Martin Geary, a resident of Bridgwater, who became the subject of a covert operation conducted by a paedophile hunting team known as 'Net Justice'.Geary was caught attempting to engage in sexual communication with what he believed was a young girl online.
The incident was part of an undercover sting carried out by the team 'Net Justice', which operates by posing as minors to identify and catch online predators.
The investigation culminated in Geary's appearance at Taunton Crown Court on November 26, 2018.
During the hearing, he pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child, attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child, and possession of indecent images of children.
The court was informed that Geary had initiated contact with an online profile he believed belonged to a schoolgirl.
He immediately sent sexually explicit messages, clearly aiming to groom the individual for sexual activity.
However, the profile was a setup by the 'Defending the Innocent' team, which poses online as children to catch predators.
The team had orchestrated the sting to expose Geary's intentions.
Following the online exchange, the 'Net Justice' team questioned Geary about his activities and subsequently contacted law enforcement authorities.
The police then took over the case, leading to his arrest and subsequent prosecution.
On January 15, 2019, Geary was sentenced at Taunton Crown Court.
The court handed down a comprehensive punishment, including a three-year community order, 120 hours of unpaid work, and a requirement to register as a sex offender.
Additionally, he was subject to a sexual harm prevention order that will remain in effect for ten years.
The court also ordered him to pay £500 in costs to the prosecution and mandated 20 days of rehabilitation requirements to address his behavior.
This case highlights the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and volunteer groups to combat online child exploitation and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals from predators.
