MARTIN COOPER AND HIS HORRIFIC CRIMES IN LUTON AND CAMBRIDGESHIRE
A man named Martin Cooper, who has a dark and disturbing history of violent crimes, has been sentenced to prison for extensive offenses committed decades ago.The crimes, which include rape, false imprisonment, and assault, relate to incidents from the 1980s and have only come to light after thorough investigative work by police in Cambridgeshire.
The case centers around a terrifying incident in March 1987 involving a young girl from Sawtry.
Despite the passage of over 30 years since the event, detectives persisted in their efforts to bring the perpetrator to justice.
Their relentless pursuit of justice eventually led to Cooper's prosecution and subsequent conviction.
On that unfortunate day, Cooper—who at the time was known by an alias, Colin Hill—lured a young girl into his vehicle.
After convincing her to enter his car, he quickly sealed the doors and drove her away to a remote wooded area near Leighton Bromswold, close to Huntingdon.
The victim's distress was compounded as she pleaded with him to turn the vehicle back towards the planned meeting point, but Cooper ignored her pleas and instead began to assault her physically.
Without his victim's consent, Cooper initiated unwanted kissing and groping.
His behavior escalated further as he made threats of violence.
Ultimately, he raped her, leaving her in a state of profound trauma.
After the assault, Cooper did not release her immediately.
Instead, he forcibly held her and told her that he intended to keep her for a few days, admitting that he was uncertain about what he might do next.
In a desperate bid to escape, the girl claimed she needed to visit the toilet.
Cooper agreed and stopped his vehicle at a nearby pub.
Seizing the opportunity, she fled from the scene, running through the pub and then hiding underneath the landlord’s vehicle.
Her quick thinking allowed her to evade further harm as Cooper eventually left the area.
The landlord, discovering her hiding in a vulnerable position, contacted her family to ensure her safety.
The horrifying narrative did not end there.
Several weeks after the initial incident, Cooper committed another atrocious act—he raped and murdered Leanne Scott, a schoolgirl from Sawtry.
For this heinous crime, he was initially sentenced to 18 years in prison.
Following the murder, the victim from the earlier assault cooperated with law enforcement authorities, providing details of her own assault, which helped in building the case against Cooper.
After serving part of his sentence, Cooper was released in 2018.
However, his freedom was short-lived, as issues related to his behavior and violations of his licence led to his re-incarceration.
Currently residing at Russell Street, Luton, Cooper’s previous crimes and subsequent release have raised ongoing concerns about the safety of the community.
Detective Constable Elaine Penniket emphasized the importance of resilience and courage, praising the survivor who endured such horrific acts.
She urged any victims or those aware of others who might be at risk to report such crimes to the police.
Penniket also highlighted the importance of disclosure laws, such as Clare’s Law and Sarah’s Law, which enable the public to access information about individuals convicted of sex offenses if there are concerns about their potential threat to others.
Authorities continue to stress that reporting sexual offenses is vital in protecting communities and preventing further tragedies.
