A man living in Swansea has been convicted of possessing a disturbing collection of indecent images and extreme pornography, with a chilling revelation that children as young as one-year-old were depicted in the illicit material. The individual, 41-year-old Mark Whitelock, came under police scrutiny following a raid on his home in Swansea.
The authorities arrived on April 30 of the previous year after intelligence suggested illicit downloads of child abuse images.
During the search, officers confiscated multiple electronic devices, including a Samsung mobile phone.
An examination of the devices revealed a staggering array of illegal content.
During the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, details emerged that the phone contained a total of 311 images categorized as level A (the most severe), along with 181 images classified as level B, and 439 images regarded as level C.
In addition to these, law enforcement recovered 239 extremely graphic pornographic images involving animals such as dogs and horses.
The prosecution, led by Andrew Davies, explained that the images depicted acts of penetration involving adults and children as young as two years old.
Investigators also noted that Whitelock had conducted internet searches with terms indicating a sexual interest in children and animals, suggesting premeditation or ongoing pursuit of such content.
The authorities determined that the illicit images had been downloaded over a period spanning from October 2020 to April 2022.
Furthermore, they uncovered that Whitelock had used software to automatically delete his browsing history, ostensibly to cover his tracks.
The search history extended further back to 2001, illustrating a long-standing pattern of engaging with or seeking out illegal material.
Whitelock, who resides on Heol Penfelyn in the Cwmrhydyceirw area, was arrested at his home and refused to answer questions during questioning.
He eventually pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images and one count of possessing extreme pornography.
It was noted during proceedings that he had no prior criminal record.
In his defense, lawyer Tabitha Walker highlighted that Whitelock had taken steps towards rehabilitation, having voluntarily sought help from organizations such as the Lucy Faithfull Foundation and Stop SO.
She also stated that he had received counseling and was participating in sessions with Sex Addicts Anonymous.
The legal representative emphasized that the primary motivation for his actions stemmed from a serious addiction to pornography.
Walker further explained that Whitelock’s paramount concern was for his own children and family, expressing remorse and shame for his offending.
She revealed that he suffers from depressive disorder and had made five previous suicide attempts, conveying the profound mental health struggles He faces.
After considering all evidence, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, the Recorder of Cardiff, handed down a sentence of one year and eight months in prison.
Whitelock was also subjected to strict controls, including requirements to register as a sex offender and a Sexual Harm Prevention Order set to remain in place for ten years, underscoring the severity of the court’s response to his crimes in Swansea.
