MARK THEOBOLD FROM RUNCORN SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF DISABLED ADULTS
In a series of disturbing incidents that have shocked the community of Runcorn, Mark Theobold, aged 60, has been subjected to multiple criminal charges related to child exploitation and the sexual abuse of a mentally-disabled adult. The sequence of events and subsequent legal proceedings reveal a pattern of heinous behavior that has left victims and their families devastated.
Back in April 2018, Theobold was sentenced to 45 months in prison after pleading guilty to one count of sexual activity with a mentally-disordered adult who was unable to give consent, along with three additional charges of sexual assault.
The court heard that the victim, who has learning disabilities, was subjected to abuse over a period of two months.
During the trial, prosecutor Dafydd Roberts described how the victim, who was sick at the time, was visibly distressed and cried after one of the assaults, which they had tried to resist.
The victim’s parent expressed the profound impact of the ordeal, describing it as a 'very tough experience' that has led to increased mistrust and mental health struggles, including depression, anxiety, and insomnia.
Despite the gravity of these offenses, Theobold’s defense argued that he had no prior convictions and showed remorse for his actions.
His lawyer, Jeremy Rawson, highlighted that Theobold had been a hard-working individual who had to leave his job at the chemical company ICI at age 25 due to battling cancer.
Rawson also pointed out that Theobold had entered guilty pleas two weeks before the trial, which the court considered as a sign of remorse.
The judge, Recorder Anthony O’Donohoe, sentenced Theobold to three years and nine months in prison, reducing the original six-year sentence because of his guilty pleas.
The court also ordered Theobold to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes against a vulnerable individual.
In a separate but related case in June 2018, Theobold’s criminal activities took a darker turn when police uncovered a trove of approximately 10,000 child abuse images on his laptop.
The images ranged from less severe Category C to the most disturbing Category A, with 552 images classified as the worst type.
Among these were eight videos, indicating prolonged and severe exploitation.
The police investigation was initiated in 2016 when Theobold was arrested in connection with the earlier allegations of molesting an adult.
During the subsequent search of his property, authorities found the disturbing collection of photographs and videos, which he had stored on his device.
At Chester Crown Court, His Honour Judge Simon Berkson described Theobold’s actions as ‘despicable’ and ‘disgusting,’ sentencing him to an additional 12 months in prison to run consecutively with his existing sentence, bringing his total incarceration period to just under five years.
The judge emphasized the severity of the images, noting that some depicted the worst forms of child abuse, including videos that suggested prolonged victimization.
Judge Berkson condemned Theobold’s offending as ‘despicable,’ highlighting the gravity of possessing such material and the harm it represents to the victims depicted.
Throughout the proceedings, Theobold’s defense acknowledged the heinous nature of his crimes but pointed to his guilty pleas and previous good character.
They also referenced his health issues, including a battle with cancer, which had impacted his life significantly.
Nonetheless, the court made it clear that the severity of his offenses, especially the possession of such a vast collection of child abuse images, warranted a substantial custodial sentence.
The combined sentences reflect the community’s need for justice and protection from individuals who commit such grave offenses.
