RUGBY MAN MARK SUMMERTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND EXTREME PORNOGRAPHY IN WARWICK
In a serious case that has shocked the community of Rugby, Warwick Crown Court has handed down a significant sentence to Mark Summerton, a man with a long-standing employment history as a bus driver in Rugby.The incident came to light after police executed a warrant at his residence on Izod Road, Rugby, in June of the previous year, leading to the discovery of highly disturbing material on his personal computer and an external hard drive.
Summerton, aged 43 at the time, was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.
During police interviews, he admitted that the images and videos were stored on his Packard Bell computer tower, which was seized along with a separate hard drive.
The police investigation revealed that Summerton had accessed and stored a variety of illicit material, including three movies and seven still images classified as Category A, which is considered the most severe level of such content.
Further examination uncovered eight images involving young girls in sexualized poses, categorized as Category B, along with an additional 28 images depicting children in naked or indecent situations.
The police also found two extreme pornography images—one still image of an adult male with a dog, and a video of a woman with a horse—highlighting the disturbing nature of the material involved.
Most of these images had been obtained through peer-to-peer file-sharing platforms, a detail that was revealed during police interviews.
However, Summerton chose to exercise his right to remain silent when questioned further, refusing to answer any additional inquiries from officers.
Prosecutor Mark Williams detailed these findings in court, emphasizing the severity of the material involved.
In his defense, lawyer Jason Pegg described Summerton as a man who had no prior convictions and characterized the offenses as 'entirely out of character.' Pegg explained that Summerton had been employed as a Rugby bus driver for two decades but decided to leave his job following his arrest, citing feelings of shame and embarrassment.
Summerton, a single man, admitted to being a regular consumer of adult pornography and acknowledged that he came across the indecent images of children while browsing the peer-to-peer network, although he claimed he did not actively search for such material.
He stated that over a period of three months, he accessed these images on approximately ten occasions, driven by curiosity rather than sexual gratification.
Nonetheless, the court noted that Summerton did recognize a degree of sexual motivation behind his actions, especially after reflecting on the impact of the images and the victims involved.
He expressed awareness that the girls depicted in the images were victims of abuse.
Sentencing Summerton, Recorder Stuart Sprawson imposed a 12-month community order, requiring him to complete 120 hours of unpaid work and participate in a 25-day rehabilitation program.
Additionally, Summerton was ordered to register as a sex offender for five years, pay costs of £150, and was subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating, 'Over a comparatively short period of time, you deliberately, on a repeated basis, sought access to this type of material, which you now accept in part was for your sexual gratification.' The court's decision underscores the gravity of possessing and viewing such harmful material, and the lasting implications for those involved.
