MARK SHEFFIELD FROM WIGAN CAUGHT NEAR EUSTON STATION WITH SEX TOYS AND PLANNING TO ABUSE 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN WEST LONDON

In July 2023, a disturbing case unfolded involving Mark Sheffield, a 54-year-old man from Wigan, who was apprehended near Euston station with a suitcase filled with sex toys, drugs, and other items, while allegedly planning to meet a 13-year-old girl for sexual purposes in a hotel in Shepherd's Bush, West London.

Sheffield, an IT worker residing on Thorley Grove in Standish, had been grooming young girls through social media platforms.

The court heard that he had arranged to meet one of these decoys, who was posing as a minor, at a Starbucks location near Euston station in February.

His plan was to take her to a hotel in Shepherd's Bush, where he intended to carry out his sickening fantasies.

Unbeknownst to Sheffield, he was communicating with an undercover police officer operating under the aliases Sophie and Isabella on the messaging app Kik.

Despite both fake profiles informing Sheffield that they were underage, he continued to send explicit images of himself and requested the girls to send pictures of themselves in school uniforms.

The Inner London Crown Court was told that Sheffield explicitly expressed his excitement about the encounter, writing messages such as, “We will go slow with the experiment.

I do not want you to feel afraid.

It feels like you are going to sex school and I’m the teacher.

I’m very excited.” Over the course of their conversations on WhatsApp and Snapchat, Sheffield was promised access to Disney hotels worldwide, which he found appealing.

On February 21, he traveled from Wigan to Euston with a suitcase containing vibrators, sexual performance-enhancing drugs, contraception, alcohol, and lubricants.

He was promptly arrested by police officers waiting for him at the station.

During his arrest, Sheffield responded emotionally, telling officers, “I was only going to meet her, I was not going to do anything, I was only going to meet someone.

My life is over, I have ballsed everything up.

I thought I was chatting to a child now I realise I was speaking to you lot.

You have all the chats and will know what was said.” Prosecutor Gregor McKinley detailed that Sheffield had not only arranged to meet the decoy girl but had also booked a hotel room and purchased tickets to travel to London for the purpose of meeting her.

When arrested, Sheffield was found with a collection of sex toys, condoms, a bottle of vodka, lubricants, and Viagra.

Later, Sheffield told probation officers that he did not drink alcohol, a statement that Judge Jonathan Higgs KC described as “menacing” in its implications.

The judge emphasized the gravity of Sheffield’s intentions, stating, “You met up with a 13-year-old girl to have sex with her in all different manners of ways, and intended to do so with copious amounts of vodka.” Further investigation of Sheffield’s phone revealed over 20 images depicting children of similar ages to the decoys being raped.

Sheffield denied downloading or viewing these videos, claiming it was his policy to delete such content when sent to him.

However, Judge Higgs rejected this explanation.

Initially, Sheffield pleaded guilty, but the case was adjourned for a Newton hearing after he instructed his defense lawyer, Oliver Renton, to dispute the basis of his guilty plea.

During the hearing on July 20, Sheffield took the stand and claimed he had “cold feet” between his last message and his arrest, asserting he had no intention of following through with his plans.

He explained that since divorcing his wife in 2017, he had lost his business, his home, and contact with his daughter.

After moving into a new residence with his son, he lost £16,000 in a Bitcoin scam during Christmas 2022.

Sheffield also recounted a relationship with a 25-year-old woman in Ukraine, who was injured during a Russian attack, leading to their losing contact.

Sheffield further claimed that his depression and anxiety had caused him to forget the messages he sent to the decoys, including explicit photos and packing sex toys into his suitcase.

When questioned by Judge Higgs, Sheffield admitted he could not remember the details of his actions but did not deny having done them.

Despite sending love heart emojis shortly before his arrest, Sheffield insisted that he only realized the gravity of his actions after he disembarked from the train and was about to visit a friend’s house.

The prosecution, however, argued that there was no change of plan and that Sheffield’s claim of “cold feet” was false, suggesting he was simply caught and unable to face the consequences.

Ultimately, Judge Higgs sentenced Sheffield to four years in prison.

The judge condemned his conduct, stating, “Absolutely nothing in your conduct gave any suggestion whatsoever you would not have willingly carried on with your criminality… You were taking advantage, in the most cruel way, of a 13-year-old girl who you asked to be in school uniform.” The case highlights the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from predators.
