MANCHESTER MAN JAILED FOR PARRICIDE AFTER PETROL ATTACK ON MOTHER
A man who carried out a violent attack on his mother by pouring petrol over her and setting her ablaze has been handed a life sentence with at least 21 years to serve.Mark See, aged 34, committed this devastating act while intoxicated at his mother Sandra See’s home in Gorton, Manchester, on July 13.
The attack was sparked by a minor dispute, during which See declined his mother’s offer to share whisky and refused her request for money to buy more alcohol.
In an act of extreme brutality, See returned from the back of the property with a six-pint bottle of petrol, which he poured over his seated mother on the sofa.
He then ignited the petrol with a cigarette lighter before fleeing in his van, leaving her engulfed in flames.
Fire crews reported that Sandra See was so badly burned she had to be identified with the help of a metal leg plate, and she died shortly after they arrived.
Court testimony revealed that See had exhibited increasing aggression towards his mother and pregnant fiancée just hours before the incident.
Prosecutors described his mood as unsteady and driven by a minor disagreement.
Later, authorities found him with burns on his hands and feet in a churchyard near Manchester Airport.
The judge, Mrs.
Justice Yip, described the manner of her death as horrifying, pointing out that she was trapped and suffering during the fire.
Greater Manchester Police senior officer Phil Reade commented that Ms.
See was murdered in her own home in a barbaric manner by her son, who callously doused her in petrol.
The police praised her family’s dignity and expressed hope that the sentencing would deliver justice.
Prosecutors and police condemned the act as ruthlessly brutal and callous.
Although See was alive with burns to his hands and feet hours after the attack, the court sentenced him in a way that reflected the gravity of his crime, which ranks among the most horrific domestic violence cases.
The court detailed how his actions started the fire inside the house, causing Ms.
See to endure unimaginable pain before her death.
The case attracted significant media attention to violence within domestic settings, with officials hopeful that justice was achieved for her tragic demise.
