Liskeard Child Sexual Abuser
In June 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Mark Quinn, a 32-year-old man from no fixed abode, who engaged in a disturbing pattern of grooming a vulnerable 14-year-old girl in the town of Liskeard. The heinous acts came to light when Quinn exploited the girl’s trust, initially presenting himself as someone willing to help her with family issues, which gradually led to a series of sexual communications that would have lasting traumatic effects on the young victim.
According to court proceedings, Quinn’s interactions with the girl began with seemingly innocent conversations, during which he showered her with compliments, describing her as beautiful, hot, and sexy. Over time, these exchanges took a darker turn as he introduced sexual topics, making the girl increasingly uncomfortable yet unable to escape his influence. The situation escalated as Quinn’s calls and messages became more frequent, with him contacting her every five minutes at times, creating a pattern of relentless harassment.
Prosecutor Brian Fitzherbert detailed how Quinn manipulated the girl into deleting messages and coerced her into posing for provocative photographs, instructing her to remove her clothing and pose in a bra. He then stored a total of 97 explicit images in a hidden folder on her device, further demonstrating his calculated efforts to exploit her. The girl, feeling increasingly frightened and powerless, felt compelled to comply with Quinn’s demands, believing she had no choice but to follow his instructions.
The grooming process reached a disturbing climax when Quinn persuaded the girl to masturbate over the phone while he did the same on the other end. This act of sexual exploitation was only uncovered when the girl’s phone was confiscated for an unrelated misdemeanour, revealing the extent of Quinn’s abuse.
Mark Quinn appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentencing, where Judge Simon Carr condemned his actions. The judge highlighted how Quinn’s initial pretenses of offering help masked his true intentions to groom and sexually exploit the young girl. The court heard that Quinn was fully aware of her age and vulnerability, yet he continued to manipulate her for his own sexual gratification.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Carr emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, “You started an internet relationship with her and initially, and troublingly, purported to put yourself forward as someone who could assist with family matters. Having set up this position, you carefully groomed her, and the conversations became sexual in nature. You knew she was 14 and particularly vulnerable.”
He further noted that Quinn had repeatedly coerced the girl into posing provocatively and had stored the explicit images for his own gratification. The judge sentenced Quinn to three years in prison, also imposing a sexual harm prevention order and sex offender notification requirements to protect the public from further harm.
This case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable minors from predators like Mark Quinn, whose actions have caused significant trauma to a young girl in Liskeard.
