MARK PHILLIPS BUSTED IN GOSPORT FOR SHPO BREACH AT NURD SHOP
Mark Richard Phillips, a resident of Forton Road in Gosport, faced justice at Portsmouth Crown Court on Friday, 1 March, after a series of concerning incidents that led to his conviction. The court proceedings revealed that Phillips, who was under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), was arrested in August 2023 following reports of inappropriate and suspicious behavior involving children under the age of 16 at his business premises, known as the Nurd Shop, located on Forton Road.During the hearing, Phillips attempted to justify his actions by claiming that since the shop's door was open, it constituted a public space, thereby implying that his conduct was permissible. However, the court was presented with evidence that clearly demonstrated his actions constituted a serious violation of the conditions set forth in his SHPO. The reports to police indicated that Phillips had organized events involving young children within his business premises, which was explicitly prohibited under the terms of his order.
Investigating officer and Offender Manager Mathew Lawn commented on the case, emphasizing that no children were physically harmed as a result of Phillips' actions. Nonetheless, Lawn pointed out that Phillips' decision to organize events for minors within his business was a blatant breach of his SHPO, revealing a disregard for the restrictions imposed upon him. Lawn further explained that concerns had been raised by parents who reported suspicious comments and behaviors from Phillips, especially when he was the only adult present during these interactions.
Expressing satisfaction with the court's handling of the case, Lawn stated, “I’m pleased that the court has taken this breach so seriously. It brings reassurance for the local community and sends a clear message that anyone found to breaching the conditions of an order they are subject to will face a significant custodial sentence.” The case underscores the importance of strict enforcement of protective orders and highlights the ongoing vigilance required to safeguard vulnerable members of the community in Gosport.
