A man named Mark Owen, who was caught engaging in illegal and disturbing online communications with a minor as part of a vigilante sting operation, faced the consequences of his actions in a London court.The incident drew significant attention not only because of the nature of the crimes but also due to the dramatic events that unfolded during the court proceedings.
Mark Owen, aged 53 and residing at Brentfield House in the Stonebridge area of London, was brought before Harrow Crown Court where he was sentenced to a total of 22 months in prison.
The sentencing occurred on June 27, following his guilty plea to multiple charges, including sexual communication with a minor, grooming, and inciting sexual activity.
The court heard that Owen had engaged in a series of inappropriate and illegal exchanges with a decoy posing as a 14-year-old girl, identified as 'Jessika.' The investigation was initiated after the vigilante group COBRA UK provided messages to the Metropolitan Police, revealing that Owen had contacted the decoy over a span of five days last year.
These messages included highly incriminating content, such as Owen sending a photograph of his genitals and requesting similar images from the decoy girl.
Prosecutor Dipan Varsani detailed the disturbing nature of the exchanges, stating that Owen had asked Jessika to send a photo of herself in the shower and expressed a desire to 'make love' to her.
The messages also included requests for her to wear a short skirt so he could easily reach between her legs when they met.
Mr.
Varsani emphasized the premeditated intent behind Owen’s messages, explaining that the plan was to meet with the girl for sexual activity, including touching her inappropriately.
The court was told that Owen explicitly asked her to wear a mini-skirt so he could put his hand up her skirt during their meeting.
Throughout the exchanges, Owen was aware that he was communicating with a minor, yet he continued to send inappropriate messages and request explicit images.
During the hearing, Owen’s defense attorney, Nick Wells, described his client as 'completely naïve and pathetic.' Mr.
Wells portrayed Owen as a man who had no history of paedophilia and claimed that he did not intend to carry out any sexual acts.
The defense highlighted Owen’s unemployment and personal struggles, including heavy drinking, suggesting that these factors contributed to his behavior.
Mr.
Wells also noted that Owen had posed as a mechanic during the online conversations, discussing mundane topics such as football and food, which he described as part of Owen’s attempt to appear more innocent.
At the time of the court appearance, Owen had already spent nearly five months in custody.
He appeared in court wearing a grey tracksuit, with his arms crossed, and showed little emotion.
Judge John Lodge explained that the most serious charge—inciting sexual activity—was considered to be of a lower category of harm because there was no clear evidence that full penetrative sex was intended or would have occurred.
The judge also acknowledged that the use of a decoy, who was not a real child, provided a small mitigating factor in sentencing.
Ultimately, Judge Lodge sentenced Owen to 22 months in prison for inciting sexual activity with a child.
Additionally, he received six months each for sexual communication and grooming.
Owen is required to serve half of his sentence in custody and will be entered onto the Sex Offenders Register for a period of ten years.
In a dramatic turn during the court proceedings, Vicky Owen, who identified herself as Mark Owen’s girlfriend, made a surprising gesture.
As Owen was being led away to prison, she stood up and proposed marriage to him, shouting, 'Baby I love you, will you marry me?' The court was momentarily interrupted by her declaration, and she later sought clarification from Judge Lodge regarding her fiancé’s sentence before leaving the courtroom.
Outside the court, reporters approached Ms.
Owen for comments, but she declined to speak.
