MARK NEEDHAM SENTENCED IN LIVERPOOL FOR CHILD GROOMING OFFENCES
A 34-year-old man named Mark Needham, who traveled to Liverpool intending to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex, was caught in a sting and subsequently sentenced.Needham had sent explicit messages and images, expressing a desire to have sex with the girl in a McDonald's toilet and requesting her to wear a short skirt for "easier access" to her underwear.
During conversations, he shared pictures of his genitalia and pornographic videos, repeatedly referring to the girl as a "schoolgirl".
Unbeknownst to Needham, he was communicating with a member of the paedophile hunter group 'N-force for Justice,' posing as a 14-year-old girl named Darcy on the chat site 'Hi.' Cheryl Mottram, prosecuting at Liverpool Crown Court, explained that Needham began chatting with the fictitious girl, claiming she was still at school.
The exchanges became increasingly sexual, with Needham sending a photo of himself and expressing admiration for the supposed girl’s body.
He also requested she perform a sex act and suggested a threesome.
Further, he sent explicit videos and images.
He initially planned to meet her in October but claimed he changed his mind "due to her age." However, by December 12, the group told him the girl was "coming to Liverpool for the day," prompting Needham to agree to meet her.
When asked about their plans, he jokingly said, "s****ing you in Maccies toilet LOL." Members of the paedophile hunter group traveled to Liverpool Lime Street Station.
Disguised members, including a woman pretending to be Darcy, approached Needham, who greeted her with a hug before authorities detained him and called police.
During the encounter, Needham revealed he had "planned to talk to her and take her to a hotel room." He also admitted to asking her to wear a short dress, claiming it would "be easier to get access to her knickers." He stated openly, "I have got no excuse for what I've done." In police interviews, Needham acknowledged that he used online chatrooms to communicate with women, admitting he enjoyed "talking dirty" and that his interest was in "the uniform, not the age of the girl." His offences spanned from November 24, 2017, to December 11, 2017.
Judge David Aubrey, QC, criticized the lengthy delay before the case was brought to court, highlighting that Needham had admitted to the offences and had no further trouble since.
Ms.
Mottram noted that police requests for details were made, but the delays were "not perhaps necessary." Needham faced charges in January this year, including attempting to incite a girl into sexual activity, grooming a child under 16, engaging in sexual communication with a child, and attempting to cause a child to view sexual images.
Despite having prior convictions, none were sexual in nature, and none since 2013.
Helen Longworth, defending Needham, appealed for a suspended sentence, emphasizing Needham's remorse and his efforts to understand his actions.
She also pointed out the significant delay in bringing the case forward, stating he had lived with this issue hanging over him for three years without further offending.
Judge Aubrey described the delay as "unreasonable in the extreme" and "inexcusable," especially given Needham’s admission of guilt.
Considering that Needham had maintained a clean record since the offences, the judge initially considered a three-year sentence but adjusted it down to one year—reduced from two years for his guilty plea and further trimmed by a year due to the delay.
Needham was sentenced to one year in prison, ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years, and comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.
After sentencing, Judge Aubrey expressed his disapproval of the delay, labeling it "more than unsatisfactory, it was unnecessary," adding that without the delay, the sentence might have been considerably longer.
