LONDON MAN JAILED FOR CONTROLLING, ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR AND DEADLY MURDER
Mark Morris, the individual responsible for Emma Day’s death, was identified as her murderer.Emma, aged 33 at the time, was killed following a violent confrontation.
Court records from 2017 described Morris as a controlling and verbally aggressive person who was prone to anger outbursts.
Emma and Morris had a child together amidst an tumultuous relationship that lasted eight years and ended in March 2016.
Before her death, Emma had reported instances of domestic violence to authorities.
In November 2016, while seeking child maintenance, she informed the child maintenance agency about Morris’s violent threats, which they were aware of prior to the incident.
Emma later canceled her claim after Morris confronted her outside her workplace at King’s College Hospital, followed her onto a bus, and issued threats.
Despite her warnings, the system was criticized for insufficient safeguards; a review identified broader systemic problems.
On May 16, 2019, Morris waited outside their child's school in West Norwood with a knife, where he killed Emma following a dispute over financial arrangements.
Morris pleaded guilty to murder at the Old Bailey and received a life sentence.
The court found that he had repeatedly threatened to kill Emma if she did not cancel her child maintenance claim, even sending her a threatening message warning he would go to prison before giving her money.
This tragic event emphasizes the need for improved responses to domestic violence and has prompted calls for independent oversight of child maintenance procedures and increased training in domestic violence awareness.
