MARK MOAN CAUGHT IN BELFAST WITH NEARLY 1,000 CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND VIDEOS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Belfast, a school caretaker named Mark Moan has been sentenced to prison after authorities uncovered a significant collection of indecent images and videos depicting children. The investigation revealed that Moan was in possession of nearly 1,000 illicit files, some of which fell into the most severe categories of child exploitation material.
Moan, aged 43, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including 14 counts of creating indecent images of children and seven counts of possessing extreme pornographic content.
The case was heard at Belfast Crown Court, where prosecutors detailed the extent of the material found during police raids on his residence.
According to the prosecution, police officers executed a search warrant at Moan’s home in Belfast in September 2011.
During the raid, authorities discovered that the suspect had been involved in the creation and possession of child abuse images.
The police found that the images included children as young as six years old being subjected to abuse, a revelation that added to the severity of the case.
The court was informed that Moan’s address could not be publicly disclosed due to legal restrictions.
A prosecutor explained that the police had received intelligence in September 2011 indicating that someone at Moan’s Belfast residence was engaged in the production of indecent photographs of children through computer activity.
While the specifics of how the police uncovered Moan’s activities were not disclosed, it was noted that the investigation was linked to other individuals involved in similar crimes.
During the search, authorities seized a computer from a bedroom in Moan’s home, which contained 187 images and video files.
Moan admitted that he possessed these files between July 5, 2011, and September 9, 2011.
Additionally, a second computer was recovered from the living room, which contained a further 746 images and videos, including some classified as among the most serious types of child abuse material.
The prosecution highlighted that some of the images found were in the most severe categories of child sex abuse images, underscoring the gravity of the offense.
The court was told that Moan’s actions were not part of any larger distribution network or 'ring,' as the defense argued that he was acting alone and had no involvement in sharing these images with others.
In his defense, a lawyer for Moan stated that his client had been suspended from his role as a school caretaker and was at risk of losing his job.
The lawyer explained that Moan’s interest in viewing such material was driven by personal issues, including the breakdown of his marriage and heavy alcohol consumption.
Despite these mitigating factors, the defense maintained that Moan was not involved in any distribution or wider criminal network.
A probation report recommended that Moan participate in a sex offenders’ awareness program for a period of three years.
The judge described the case as particularly serious, emphasizing the harm caused to children and the importance of justice.
The judge stated, “This is a bad case.
No child should be subjected to what I have viewed.” Ultimately, Mark Moan was sentenced to two years in prison, with nine months to be served behind bars.
Following his release, he will be subject to a further 15 months on license, ensuring ongoing supervision of his conduct.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable victims.
