MARK HUMPHREYS SENTENCED IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEX ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the community of Tunbridge Wells, an 80-year-old man named Mark Humphreys has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of a series of heinous sexual offenses spanning over three decades. The sentencing took place at Maidstone Crown Court on January 26, following a detailed trial in which the evidence against Humphreys was deemed overwhelming by the presiding judge.
Humphreys, who resides on Cherry Tree Road in Tunbridge Wells and is also known by the nickname Tony, was found guilty of multiple serious crimes committed against children.
The offenses include two counts of rape, four counts of indecency with a child, four counts of indecent assault, and two additional grave sexual offenses.
These acts were committed over a period from July 1965 to March 1996, involving victims as young as three years old.
Judge Martin Joy, delivering the sentence, emphasized the severity and duration of Humphreys' criminal conduct.
He stated, “You were convicted on overwhelming evidence of a course of serious sex offences spanning a period of more than 30 years.
All of the offences were committed between 1965 and 1996, and you are now 80 years old.
You took advantage of each victim and made sure that they did not tell anyone, by using violence and other threats.
Then they did not report the incidents to the police at the time.” Humphreys' defense argued that the victims had fabricated their stories, claiming they had conspired to invent false accounts of abuse and that police officers had also lied.
Despite these claims, the court found the evidence compelling enough to convict him.
As part of his punishment, Humphreys was sentenced to 18 years in prison, with additional concurrent sentences of 10 and 1 year.
Furthermore, he was placed under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits him from working with children under 16 or having unsupervised contact with minors.
During the sentencing, Judge Joy read aloud impact statements from the victims, who chose to remain anonymous.
One victim described how Humphreys “stole my innocence and my childhood,” adding that his abuse was compounded by violence, both physical and mental.
She expressed that the trauma has haunted her throughout her life, affecting her ability to trust and her personal relationships.
She said, “When I have a partner I feel anxious, checking their mood.
The hardest part was keeping this inside of me – as nobody believed me.
This affected my life so much, and now I do not have any expectations of being treated as a decent human being.
It has prevented me from achieving what I could have done in life.” Another victim stated, “This abuse has taken all my trust away from me in relation to men.
I suffer from panic attacks and I started ripping my hair out.
I have low self-esteem and suffer from confidence issues.
What happened to me has affected my relationships, and I am angry I was not given support when I first reported it.
I will never forgive him.
What happened to me plays on my mind every day.” The final statement revealed a sense of numbness, with the victim saying, “I am completely numb, and have been for years.
I cope by blocking it out and refusing to think about it.
But it is always there in the background.” Investigations into Humphreys’ crimes revealed that he committed these offenses at various addresses, including locations in Tunbridge Wells and Sleaford, Sussex.
During the trial, it was disclosed that Humphreys would sometimes reward his victims with biscuits or milk after abusing them, while warning them not to tell anyone.
Disturbingly, he took Polaroid photographs of one girl performing a sexual act on him and held another girl above his head, instructing her to urinate in his mouth.
In another instance, he forced candles into the bottom of a child.
Humphreys was finally arrested after one of his victims approached police in March 2015.
The victim also reported that Humphreys had physically assaulted her, leaving welt marks on her legs and backside.
Following an extensive investigation by Kent Police, Humphreys was charged with multiple offenses related to three victims, all of whom were under 16 at the time of the abuse.
His crimes have left a lasting scar on the community of Tunbridge Wells, highlighting the importance of vigilance and justice in cases of child abuse.
