MARK GREENWOOD SENTENCED IN WAKEFIELD FOR CHILD SEXUAL OFFENCES AND INDECENT IMAGES
A man who was previously handed a nearly 20-year prison term for multiple child sexual offences has now been sentenced to an additional three years behind bars following further investigations conducted by local detectives.Mark Greenwood, a resident of Normanton, was originally sentenced at Leeds Crown Court in 2019 after admitting to six separate sex-related crimes involving children, as well as three counts of producing or possessing indecent images of a juvenile.
His initial conviction marked a significant step in addressing allegations of serious sexual misconduct involving minors.
Subsequently, after Greenwood’s initial sentencing, new information emerged when a second victim came forward with allegations that Greenwood had sexually abused her during her childhood.
This revelation prompted a fresh investigation by officers from the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit, who diligently examined the new claims.
As the investigation unfolded, Greenwood was charged with additional offences, specifically sexual assault.
He was brought before Leeds Crown Court to face these new accusations.
In court, the 57-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to the sexual assault charge, underscoring his acknowledgment of the crime.
Today, Greenwood received a further prison sentence, adding three more years to his time behind bars.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court also ordered that Greenwood remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and be subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, conditions designed to monitor and restrict his behaviour to protect the public.
Detracting from the seriousness of these offences, Detective Constable Will Denton from the Wakefield District Safeguarding Unit expressed his support for the extended sentence.
He highlighted the courage of the victims in coming forward, stating, “We welcome the extension to Greenwood’s sentence and commend the bravery of the victim and her family for coming forward and speaking with our officers.” He further emphasized the ongoing danger Greenwood poses, saying, “There is no doubt that he is a dangerous man who deserves to remain behind bars for a substantial amount of time.” DC Denton closed with an encouraging note, hoping that the successful prosecution will inspire other victims of abuse to seek help, adding, “I hope this result will encourage other victims to engage with our specially trained officers who work tirelessly to bring offenders to justice.” Members of the public are advised that anyone with concerns about the welfare of children should contact West Yorkshire Police or their local authority’s children’s social services to ensure safeguarding and protection efforts continue effectively.
