MARK GILLINGS SHOCKING CRIMES IN COVENTRY AND WALSGRAVE: SEXUAL ASSAULTS AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY REVEALED

In a series of disturbing incidents that have sent shockwaves through the Coventry community, Mark Gillings, aged 31, has been convicted of multiple sexual offenses, including assaults on elderly women and possession of extreme child abuse images.

The crimes unfolded in various locations across Coventry and Walsgrave, highlighting a pattern of predatory behavior that has left residents deeply unsettled.

Gillings, residing at Vincent Wyles House on Attoxhall Road in Coventry, was found guilty of sexually assaulting two pensioners within a short span of time, shortly after serving a suspended sentence for similar offenses.

His actions prompted a stern response from the courts, which deemed him an ongoing threat to women and vulnerable individuals.

At Warwick Crown Court, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano sentenced Gillings to a substantial prison term of four years and eight months.

The judge emphasized the gravity of his offenses, stating, “These were vulnerable victims, old enough to be your mother, walking alone in isolated places.” The court also ordered that Gillings serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being considered for parole.

Upon release, he will remain on license for the remainder of his sentence plus an additional five years, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes.

The court detailed the first assault, which occurred during a summer morning at Wyken Croft Nature Park.

A pensioner walking her dog heard footsteps behind her and, upon stepping aside to let a runner pass, Gillings suddenly approached her, wrapping his arms around her and inappropriately rubbing her crotch over her clothing.

The elderly woman fought him off with her dog lead, calling out for help and attempting to defend herself.

She fell and sprained her wrist during the struggle.

Although she reports that the physical effects have mostly subsided, the psychological trauma has significantly impacted her, leaving her hesitant to walk her usual routes.

Later that summer, another pensioner was walking her dog along the bank of the River Sowe in Walsgrave when Gillings cycled up behind her.

Demonstrating what appeared to be courteous behavior, he dismounted and wheeled his bike past her on the narrow path.

However, he soon reappeared sitting on a bench further along the route.

According to prosecutor Michael Aspinall, Gillings approached her abruptly, pushing her onto the grass verge and then attempting to sexually assault her by reaching up her skirt.

The victim fought back, using her dog lead to strike him and shouting for help, but no assistance arrived.

Gillings then fled the scene, but not before leaving DNA evidence on her underwear, which linked him to the assault.

The court revealed that these attacks occurred just seven days after Gillings completed an eight-month suspended sentence handed down in December 2015.

During that earlier case, Gillings, then of Ribble Road, Stoke, Coventry, admitted to making indecent images of children and distributing one such image.

Police had executed a warrant at his home after discovering he had been receiving and viewing child abuse images.

His devices contained a total of 125 still images and one video classified as Category A, representing the most severe form of child sexual abuse.

Additionally, there were 61 Category B images and 359 in Category C, along with 48 prohibited CGI images depicting children involved in sex acts with adults and ten images of extreme pornography involving animals.

Further complicating his criminal record, in August 2017, Gillings was involved in another disturbing incident where he sexually assaulted women in Coventry, again within days of completing a suspended sentence for similar offenses.

He pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting one woman in June and attempting to assault another in July, both in Walsgrave, an area known for dog-walking routes.

Although he denied a third charge of assaulting a woman in September, the court noted that the victim had not identified him during an identity procedure, and Gillings admitted to the other two offenses.

Previously, in November 2016, Gillings, then 29, had been found with images on his phone depicting young girls being raped.

Due to procedural errors at Coventry Magistrates Court, the case was transferred to Warwick Crown Court, where Gillings pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including making and distributing indecent images of children, possessing still images and videos, and possessing prohibited CGI images and extreme pornography involving animals.

Judge Richard Griffith-Jones sentenced him to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and ordered him to complete 60 hours of unpaid work, as well as registering as a sex offender for ten years.

Throughout these proceedings, Gillings’ actions have been met with widespread condemnation, and his case underscores the ongoing threat posed by individuals with a history of child exploitation and sexual violence.

The Coventry community remains vigilant as authorities continue to monitor his case and ensure that justice is served for his victims.
