MARK GEMMELL CAUGHT IN PAISLEY FOR SICK ONLINE CHILD SEX OFFENCES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Paisley, a man named Mark Gemmell, aged 45, was exposed for engaging in heinous online activities involving the exploitation of minors. The incident came to light after Gemmell attempted to groom what he believed was a 13-year-old girl through social media platforms, only to be caught in a sting operation conducted by vigilant hunting groups.
Gemmell’s actions were uncovered when he sent explicit videos and photographs of himself to a decoy who was posing as a young girl named Sasha.
The decoy, Megg Kothe, is part of a specialized group known as The Soloceptors / Soul Survivors, which actively works to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to exploit children online.
Kothe posed as a 13-year-old girl on the Kik messenger app, engaging in conversations with Gemmell during late July 2018.
According to court records, Gemmell entered a chat room called Teen UK Only on Kik and initiated contact with several users, including the decoy Sasha.
During their exchanges, he asked Sasha for her age, sex, and location, to which she responded that she was 13.
The court heard that Gemmell then sent Sasha a picture of a sex toy accompanied by the comment, “Yes, feels good.” He further sent a smaller sex toy with the remark, “You can take my smaller one,” indicating his intent to groom the decoy.
Over subsequent weeks, Gemmell continued to send Sasha explicit images, including a photograph of his own genitalia.
He also engaged in conversations where he asked her if she would “join him in bed” and “touch him,” further demonstrating his predatory behavior.
The situation escalated when Gemmell sent a video of himself naked in a bath, which prompted Ms.
Kothe to report the matter to police authorities.
Law enforcement officials responded swiftly.
On September 3 of the previous year, officers raided Gemmell’s residence on Howard Street, Seedhill, Paisley.
During the search, they seized a Samsung mobile phone that contained a staggering 791 images of child abuse.
Cyber Crime Unit analysis revealed that these images were classified into different categories, with 102 images falling into the most severe Category A, 96 in Category B, and the remaining 593 in Category C.
Further investigation uncovered that 83 still images depicting the sexual abuse of children had been distributed from Gemmell’s phone to various contacts via Kik and WhatsApp messaging platforms.
The evidence was compiled and presented to the court, leading to a series of guilty pleas from Gemmell.
He admitted to charges of possessing indecent images of children between September 2012 and September 2018 at his Paisley address, as well as distributing such images between September 2013 and November 2014.
Additionally, he pleaded guilty to attempting to induce an older child to view sexual images and to communicate indecently for sexual gratification from July 1, 2018, to September 3, 2018.
During a pre-trial hearing, defense lawyer Jonathan Manson acknowledged that Gemmell was fully aware of the gravity of his actions but chose to reserve further comments until sentencing.
The court, presided over by Sheriff Tom McCartney, took a stern stance.
Gemmell was placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register and remanded in custody, with bail revoked due to the seriousness of the offences.
The judge emphasized the severity of the crimes, stating, “Due to the serious nature of these offences, bail is revoked and you will be remanded in custody.” Gemmell is scheduled to return to court on November 28, where he will learn his final sentence.
The case has highlighted the ongoing dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community groups working together to protect vulnerable children from exploitation.
