Coulby Newham Sexual Abuser
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Mark Feasey, a 53-year-old man from Coulby Newham, was caught attempting to meet a minor in Middlesbrough after engaging in a series of online communications that revealed his predatory intentions. The incident unfolded during the first coronavirus lockdown, a period marked by increased online activity and, unfortunately, a rise in grooming cases.

Feasey believed he was chatting with a 13-year-old girl, but in reality, he was communicating with an undercover police officer operating a decoy profile. The Middlesbrough-based court heard how the police initiated the sting in April of the previous year, with Feasey making contact with the fake profile for the first time.

Prosecutor Chris Baker detailed how Feasey responded to the decoy's messages and asked her to continue their conversation via WhatsApp. The police officer, posing as a young girl, made it clear she was only 13 years old and even sent an image purportedly of a girl her age. Over the course of nearly a month, from April 9th to May 12th, the pair exchanged messages on nine separate occasions, with discussions increasingly veering into sexual territory.

There were multiple indications that Feasey intended to meet the girl in person, with plans set for April 23rd at Albert Park in Middlesbrough. However, the meeting never materialized. During their conversations, the decoy revealed she was living alone with her mother, who worked long hours, and Feasey asked for and received photographs of her, while also sending a picture of himself. He was particularly insistent on secrecy, urging her to delete any images of him to avoid detection.

The conversations grew more explicit as they progressed. Notably, Feasey told the girl, “Sex is fine and nothing to be afraid of,” and advised her to be safe and sensible if she met someone she liked. When the decoy asked whether she should bring a condom, Feasey responded that it was her decision and that he would not pressure her. He also expressed concern about the potential legal repercussions due to his age, hinting at the possibility of being accused of grooming.

He further advised her not to tell anyone about their interactions, warning that they could get into trouble if they met. The police prosecutor highlighted that the conversation also included discussions about accessing pornography and whether she wanted to view it with him, indicating a disturbing level of manipulation and grooming.

Feasey was arrested on May 26th of the previous year. During police interviews, he expressed remorse, claiming he had canceled the planned meeting on April 23rd after realizing his actions were wrong. He admitted to messaging the girl after that date and described himself as “disgusted” with his behavior.

At a previous hearing, Feasey pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child under 16 following grooming. The court was informed that he was already subject to sex offender notification requirements but had breached these conditions twice by staying overnight at a woman’s home where children were present.

During sentencing, Judge Jonathan Carroll emphasized the seriousness of Feasey’s actions. He pointed out that the communication spanned nine days within a relatively short period and included attempts to meet the girl, which thankfully did not occur. The judge criticized Feasey’s response to the condom question as “deeply manipulative,” stressing that such decisions should never be made by a child.

Judge Carroll made it clear that he did not believe Feasey was unaware of his legal obligations, dismissing any claims of ignorance regarding his breach of the sex offender notification order. Instead, he sentenced Feasey to two years in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete a sex offender treatment program, undertake 30 days of rehabilitation activities, and perform 200 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, Feasey was placed under a three-month curfew, a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, and must adhere to sex offender notification requirements for the foreseeable future.
