MARK DAY AND PORTSMOUTH DEFENDANTS CONVICTED IN INTERNATIONAL PAEDOPHILE RING CASE
A woman and four men, including Mark Day of Sandwich, Kent, were convicted on Wednesday of crimes linked to an international paedophile network that disguised its activities through a nudist website. The defendants, which included Daniel Bell, 27, a serving soldier, faced a total of 16 charges, with the jury at Portsmouth Crown Court still deliberating on one of Noon’s charges related to arranging a child sex offence.
Melissa Noon, 30, along with Daniel Bell, Simon Hilton, 29, Mark Day, 45, and John Maddox, 46, all denied the allegations.
Prosecutor Kerry Maylin explained during the trial that Noon and her partner, Robert Hathaway, 36, were at the heart of the ring that exploited two British children under 13.
Hathaway established a naturist website as a cover for distributing indecent images and videos of children and for meeting predators worldwide.
The evidence showed that the couple used online communication to discuss child abuse and coordinate further assaults, some of which involved rape, attempted rape, and the use of sex aids.
Police seized over 20 sex aids from Noon and Hathaway.
The children were made to participate in naked wrestling and play Twister in the nude.
The jury, composed of six women and six men, took more than 12 hours to reach verdicts on most charges.
Melissa Noon was found guilty on multiple counts, including three of causing a child to engage in sexual activity, one of causing a child to watch a sexual act, two of sexual assault of a child, two of arranging a child sex offence, one of inciting a child to sexual activity, and two of possessing indecent photographs of children.
She previously pleaded guilty to two charges of cruelty to a child.
Robert Hathaway, of Portsmouth, was described as the ring’s ringleader and prior to sentencing, pleaded guilty to 45 offences, which included two charges of child rape, four of sexual assault, 15 involving child sexual activity, and multiple counts of distributing and possessing indecent images.
Mark Day, who was living in military accommodation in Emsworth but is from Sandwich, was convicted of one count of arranging a child sex offence and one of possessing indecent images.
A second similar charge was dismissed by the judge.
Simon Hilton, from London, was convicted of arranging a child sex offence after previously admitting 13 offences, including sexual assault and possession of extreme pornography.
John Maddox, 46, of Rainham, Essex, was found guilty of causing a child to engage in sexual activity and had earlier pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images.
Additional defendants have already admitted involvement: Stephen Fraser, 41, from Cambridge, accepted 27 charges including sexual assault and possession of indecent images; Lee Parson, 38, from Portsmouth, pleaded guilty to child sex offence and possession charges; and Jonathan Garner-Harris, 37, a teacher from North Yorkshire, appeared at Durham Crown Court for over 20 offences related to inciting a child sex offence and indecent images, with sentencing scheduled to occur alongside the others.
The investigation was triggered after Australian authorities uncovered a similar ring that also abused a young child and shared images with Hathaway, who was in contact with this Australian group.
Among the evidence collected were 14,000 indecent images of children, 300 videos, and 2,000 pages of chat logs.
One of Noon's charges involved encouraging an Australian child to engage in sexual activity, highlighting the international scope of the case.
