Mark Cumming

Gosport Sexual Abuser

August 2014 Gosport man used neighbour’s internet to view child abuse images online SHAMED Mark Cumming used his neighbour’s internet to look at hundreds of images of child abuse online. He logged on to his neighbour’s wi-fi after he asked for the code when his own internet wasn’t working. The 42-year-old’s horrified neighbour was being monitored by police but officers quickly realised it was Cumming viewing the images. Portsmouth Crown Court heard he had even looked at vile images while sat next to his wife on their sofa. The court heard she was unaware. He was sentenced to a three-year community order, given three years of supervision and a sexual offences protection order. Speaking to The News, his shocked neighbour said: ‘I couldn’t believe it. ‘We never thought that in a million years. I felt awful. ‘He put up a couple of shelves and my other neighbours and myself became part of a gardening thing. ‘It’s disgusting. They were friends when we moved in. There’s 42 children in our street – it’s a worry.’ The neighbour confronted Cumming, of Parham Road, Gosport, while he was on bail but he told the person the allegations weren’t true. The court heard he had initially not admitted his offences to police at interview but subsequently did so and pleaded guilty on June 30. In total Cumming had 1,053 images of children across all levels of seriousness. He had 12 moving images of children, ranging across all categories, and 822 images of extreme pornography involving animals. Cumming pleaded guilty to nine counts of making indecent images of children and three of possession of extreme pornography. He viewed the images between 2010 and 2013. Sentencing him, Judge Sarah Munro QC said: ‘By the end of the three-year period you spent five to six hours a day accessing pornography. ‘Even at work you would spend an hour accessing it. ‘Without people like you who gain satisfaction, the market for this devastating crime would be reduced. ‘You now seem to appreciate the grave matter. ‘You now feel shame, as well you should, both in relation to the case but also to the hurt to your wife and to your neighbour whose internet you used.’ Judge Munro ordered him to complete a sexual treatment programme. Defending, Sarah Jones said Cumming had shown a desire to make sure he never offends again. She said he had spoken to probation about trying to stop his impulses before he was sentenced on July 31 at the crown court. The images were discovered on two laptops and a mobile phone used by Cumming. Judge Munro ordered their destruction. Hampshire police found the images on his computer equipment after searching his home on December 6. Police had monitored his neighbour as they were handed an IP address used to look at the images.
