MARK COX FROM BURY ST EDMUNDS SENTENCED FOR INDECENT ASSAULTS INVOLVING SCHOOLGIRL

In a significant case heard at Ipswich Crown Court, Mark Cox, a 46-year-old resident of Ridley Road in Bury St Edmunds, was sentenced to seven years in prison for serious sexual offenses committed over two decades ago. The charges stemmed from incidents involving a schoolgirl during the 1990s, when Cox was still a teenager himself.

During the proceedings on Friday, January 13, Cox faced a jury after denying six counts of indecent assault and one count of rape. The trial revealed that the alleged offenses took place when Cox was in his late teens, and the court was presented with evidence and testimonies related to these allegations. Despite his denial, the jury convicted him of four counts of indecent assault, while acquitting him of the remaining three charges, including the rape accusation.

Following the conviction, Judge Martyn Levett imposed a sentence of seven years of imprisonment on Cox. Additionally, the judge ordered a one-year extended license period, which is a common measure to ensure continued supervision after release. Cox was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his contact with the victim and aims to prevent any further harm. Furthermore, he was prohibited from contacting the victim until further notice, emphasizing the court’s concern for the victim’s safety and well-being.

Prosecutor Matthew Sorel-Cameron provided context during the trial, stating that the offenses occurred when Cox was in his late teens. The court was also informed that Cox was arrested in January 2019, at which point he claimed that the allegations were “fabricated.” Cox chose not to testify in his defense during the trial, leaving the court to rely on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
