MARK CAMPBELL AND SHOCKING RAPE IN CARMARTHENSHIRE

A man named Mark Campbell from Carmarthenshire has been handed a severe prison sentence after committing a horrifying sexual assault.

The case revealed disturbing details of the incident, which took place in Ammanford on August 21, 2021, and involved the victim being filmed during the attack.

According to court proceedings, Campbell was recorded by his victim during a night when she was asleep.

The footage, which had been found on her phone, showed Campbell engaging in sexual acts with her while she was unconscious, and it included his explicit commentary filled with insults and offensive language.

The recordings demonstrated an appalling breach of trust and a lack of respect for the victim's dignity and welfare.

The court heard that Campbell, who is 32 years old and currently has no fixed address, initially denied involvement but later pleaded guilty when the evidence was presented.

His plea change came on the second day of his trial after the jury had been shown the graphic footage, which left little doubt about his guilt.

Prior to this, Campbell’s legal team had considered contesting the charges, but he ultimately admitted to the offense before the victim was called to give her testimony.

In the police interview following his arrest, Campbell attempted to justify his actions by claiming that what transpired was part of some role-play scenario and insisted that the victim was not sleeping at the time.

Despite these assertions, the court found the evidence, including the video evidence, overwhelming.

The judge presiding over the case, His Honour Judge Geraint Walters, outlined Campbell’s extensive criminal record, which included 92 previous offenses and 39 court appearances.

Although none of those past convictions involved sexual offenses, some were related to violence and threats of violence directed at women, painting a troubling pattern of troubling behavior.

During the hearing, a victim impact statement was read aloud, revealing the profound emotional scars left by the incident.

The victim detailed her ongoing struggles, including difficulty sleeping, night sweats, and distressing dreams.

She described feelings of depression, for which she had been prescribed medication, and explained how her trust in others had been severely damaged.

Her relationships with friends had become strained, and she withdrew from social interactions.

The victim expressed deep concern about her future romantic relationships, describing difficulties with intimacy and feeling uncomfortable with physical affection.

She shared her regret that Campbell had not pleaded guilty early on, which would have spared her months of anxiety and distress.

Describing the aftermath of the attack, she said, ‘I have had ten months of hell, worried I would have to talk about what happened in a court full of people.

I have been physically unwell because of worry.' The court also heard that Campbell showed remorse during the investigation, stating that he was disgusted with his own behavior and the harm caused.

It was noted that he had indicated a willingness to participate in support programs available to inmates to address his conduct.

Judge Walters emphasized the severity of the crime, describing the act as one of the greatest degradations a woman can endure.

He explicitly referenced the graphic footage shown during the trial, calling it a deeply upsetting record of the assault.

As a result, Campbell was sentenced to ten years in prison at Swansea Crown Court on Thursday, June 23.

The sentence includes a requirement to serve at least three quarters of the term before being eligible for parole.

Additionally, he received a concurrent sentence of three months for sending a threatening message to another victim, to which he had pleaded guilty early in the proceedings.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Inspector Melanie Havard, praised the strength and resilience of Campbell’s victim.

She commended her bravery in coming forward and the persistence she demonstrated throughout the investigation.

DI Havard emphasized the police’s commitment to pursuing justice for victims of sexual assault and reaffirmed Dyfed-Powys Police's dedication to investigating serious allegations such as this.

The police also urged others who may have suffered similar abuse to come forward, offering reassurance that they can seek help either through law enforcement or confidential support services like New Pathways, an independent charity dedicated to assisting survivors through every stage of the process.
