MARK BURGESS SENTENCED IN PORTSMOUTH FOR NEARLY FOUR DECADES OF CHILD SEX ABUSE

Survivors of a harrowing and long-standing cycle of child sexual abuse courageously faced their abuser in court on Wednesday, 30 June.

Mark Burgess, 68, of St Chads Avenue in Hilsea, was described as a ‘conniving and exploitative serial paedophile’ during the proceedings.

The court sentenced Burgess to 40 years in prison, with a minimum term of 21 years before he can be considered for parole.

Following a detailed investigation by Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Marmion team, Burgess was charged with multiple offences involving 13 children, all under the age of 16 when the abuse occurred.

These incidents took place over nearly four decades while he worked as a choirmaster for the All Saints church choir in Portsmouth and the Westbourne Choir in Sussex, spanning from 1975 to 2009.

On 28 May, after a lengthy trial that commenced on 15 March at Portsmouth Crown Court, Burgess was convicted of 26 counts of indecent assault, 15 counts of gross indecency with a child, 4 counts of buggery, 1 count of attempted indecent assault, and 2 counts of sexual activity with a child.

The court heard that Burgess was a music teacher and choir master who used his roles to come into contact with children repeatedly.

His employment included positions at Portsmouth City Boys’ School, as well as leading choirs at St John’s Church in Westbourne, Sussex, and All Saints Church in Portsmouth’s Commercial Road.

Throughout the trial, it was revealed that Burgess’s attention became ‘fixed’ on a series of young children.

He exploited his authority in these educational and religious settings to build trust and closer proximity, occasionally involving their families.

This trust was then manipulated for Burgess’s own sexual gratification, with assaults occurring during piano lessons at his home or church vestry, in his car, during out-of-town choir trips, and in the school music room.

For many years, these acts remained secret, but as adults now, the victims found the courage to report the abuse to police.

In emotional court testimonies, survivors described the profound harm caused by Burgess.

One referred to him as a ‘festering, rancid boil,’ and others condemned him for grooming, manipulating, charming, and bribing children for his own sexual pleasure.

They labeled him as ‘abhorrent,’ ‘deplorable,’ ‘calculating,’ and ‘despicable.’ One adult woman survivor shared how the abuse had affected her passion for music, stating, “This person helped me use my voice to make beautiful music, but I would become too ashamed to ever use it again.” Another survivor, who was 13 at the time, expressed his pain: “You took a bright, naïve, funny, energetic child and you destroyed all of that in the most cynical and vile way.” Reflecting on his journey to find his voice after many years, he added, “It has been a very difficult process, but I take courage and strength from the survivors here, and the love and support of my family.” His Honour Judge William Ashworth praised the survivors for their dignity, restraint, and unwavering honesty in recounting their experiences during sentencing.

He commended their bravery in coming forward.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Adam Edwards commented: “Burgess made a choice to exploit his position and manipulate scenarios that allowed him to carry out these heinous acts.

These were young children, and he deliberately preyed on their naivety for his own sordid purposes.

He is now behind bars, where he belongs, for a very long time.” He added that the survivors’ courage had played a crucial role in ensuring justice, noting, “The survivors in this case have shown incredible bravery and strength throughout this entire process, which has ensured that the cowardly man who sat in the dock cannot harm another person again.

Their courage is to be commended.

I am pleased that justice has now been served and that these brave individuals have had their voices heard after years of keeping this abuse secret.” An NSPCC spokesperson stated: “Burgess brutally abused his position of trust at the cruel expense of his victims’ wellbeing.

This case demonstrates that perpetrators of child abuse can be brought to justice, regardless of how much time has passed or who they are.

We hope this sentencing allows the survivors to begin to move forward with their lives.” Operation Marmion is Hampshire Constabulary’s dedicated team that investigates longstanding cases of child sex abuse within institutions or involving prominent individuals.
