MARK BASCUNANA SENTENCED IN COVENTRY FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE OFFENSES
In April 2005, a disturbing case involving the sexual abuse of a young girl culminated in the sentencing of Mark Bascunana, a 37-year-old man from Coventry, who was convicted of multiple serious charges related to child abuse. At Coventry Crown Court, Bascunana was found guilty of five counts of indecent assault and five counts of indecency with a child.
Despite his initial denial of the allegations, the jury deliberated and returned a verdict of guilty on all charges, highlighting the severity of the crimes committed.
The prosecution detailed that the abuse took place over a span of two years, from 2001 to 2003.
During this period, Bascunana engaged in sexual misconduct with a girl who was between 13 and 15 years old.
The court heard that he had touched her inappropriately and committed a sexual act in her presence at a residence in Coventry.
These acts inflicted significant harm on the young victim and underscored the gravity of the offenses.
Following his conviction, Bascunana was sentenced to three years in prison.
The court also imposed strict conditions on his future conduct to protect potential victims.
He was ordered not to seek employment or volunteer work that could bring him into contact with children under the age of 16.
Additionally, he was prohibited from residing with children under 16 without prior approval from local social services, a restriction that was granted due to the fact that his partner is pregnant with their child.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by the justice system to address and penalize crimes involving the exploitation of minors, and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from such heinous acts.
